BEAM Festival presents BEAM NIGHT – a special one-off taster event held at Cafe OTO. Following BEAM’s mission, the acts tonight were all featured at BEAM 2011 and all use unusual and/or homemade interfaces to perform.

Atau Tanaka & Adam Parkinson play iPhones as sensitive, handheld controllers.
Bruno Zamborlin performs Cafe OTO’s wall – possibly for the first time?! – with his invention, MOGEES, which read gestural language on any surface.
Marco Donnarumma’s Music for Flesh is a visceral sensor performance using his instrument system Xth sense, which has just been named “the world’s most innovative new musical instrument”.
Tom Bugs appears in a rare performance using his Modular Synths.
Beguilingly creative Leafcutter John conjures up soundscapes with his new explorations in light and sound.

Following the first event event of the BodyControlled series, BodyControlled #2 focuses on the idea of incompatible matter. While BC #1 was organized around the concept of “other spaces”, using the specific architecture at LEAP and provoking it in order to synthesize new environments, BC #2 combines space and sound.

Through exploring the physical reality of sound-instruments and objects, complex acoustic spaces emerge. Sound of any kind – vocals, instruments, vibrations – become a material themselves, a hybrid. Creating Matter-Incompatible, the exhibition focuses on searching for the hidden materiality of acoustics, where distinguishing between live-produced sound and mechanically generated playback becomes a challenging self-observation.

I Cntrl Nature (Marco Donnarumma, 2009) is an unambiguous, synesthetic action of audiovisual improvisation.The live act represents the sarcastic celebration of the human instinct finally able to govern the nature. The improvised body gestures of the performer sculpt in real-time the soundscape and the moving images. The living creature on the screen reacts to the movements of the performer on stage in a mutual agreement and attraction.

Briefly to mention I’ll be playing Music for Flesh II tonight at the Linux Audio Conference in the section Electro-acoustic concerts.

Concerts starts at 7pm.

Music for Flesh II is a solo sonic piece for augmented muscles sounds.
It aims at demonstrating an experimental coupling between theatrical gesture and biophysical generation and control of music.
Based on the Xth Sense wearable technology (open source and DIY based).
I’ll also give a related paper on Sunday.

World premiere of an 80 channel immersive concert based on a decade of natural sounds recorded in the world’s rain forests.

Rainforests are inhabited by an incredibly rich variety of sounds—much like a piece of electronic music: the astonishing variety of sounds comes from sources that are concrete yet overwhelmingly invisible.

Hyper-Rainforest is a monumental sound piece, both in duration and in how the sounds are projected to the Concert Hall. All music in this performance stems from field recordings—but it does not simulate the natural reality of the original locations. Instead, the work creates a sonic hyper-reality, a virtual world of sound and music that goes beyond a trip to a rainforest. The original materials are observed, analyzed, and composed to create a piece that surrounds the audience, moving deep into the sounds themselves and toward new sounds still rooted in their origins.

This world premiere commission was developed in residence at EMPAC.

New Work Residency at Inspace, New Media Scot and Informatics Edinburgh

I just ended a new work residency at Inspace, home to a joint research partnership between the School of Informatics and New Media Scotland.
During the residency, me and Brendan F Doyle (Production Sound Engineering) worked on a participatory Musicircus which included a massive, reactive sonic system for 8 Xth Sense biosensors and 8 audio channels.
The piece was premiered two days ago on 15th March during a public event which gathered quite a good amount of people from different backgrounds, music, sound design, informatics, hackers and general public.

It was awesome to see how the audience positively reacted to this novel paradigm of musical performance for muscle sounds, namely generating and controlling electroacoustic sounds and music moving and contracting muscles. After some initial – and expected – disorientation, everybody started realizing how to use the sensors and how to interact with the system, only then the actual Musicircus started.

The event was pretty successful, everything worked out fairly smoothly – except the few things which always “have to” get broken just before the opening – and we received several excited and stimulating feedback. Overall a great and satisfying experience.

During the same night, I also performed my new solo sonic piece Music for Flesh II, for augmented muscle sounds and Xth Sense technology. The acoustic capabilities of Inspace were challenging: glass walls all around, an empty floor which acts as a resonant shield, and interesting sonic reflections happening all around the space. I need to thank again my colleague Brendan for his great work with the sound engineering of the venue and his live mixing during my performance.

Chris Scott (who took the heading picture above during a rehearsal at Inspace) documented with awesome pictures the whole residency, so hopefully soon I’ll post a report, with pics, audio and video!

I just uploaded an excerpt from 6 channels open air participatory soundscape concert “High Spheres” hosted at Re-new Festival, Copenhagen in May 2010.
The concert – performed by the audience and managed by an autonomous responsive system developed in Pd – took place for the opening of the festival and last around 40mins, with a late night reprise.

High Spheres – Open air multi-channel participative concert @ Re-New Festival, Denmark

On 18th May at 19.30 at Huset i Magstræde, Copenhagen, Denmark, Re-New Digital Arts Festival kicks off prensenting ‘High Spheres’ a participative multi-channel concert for found objects and reactive generative music by Edinburgh based new media and sound artist Marco Donnarumma.

The action takes place open air. No musical instruments are provided, but stones and leaves. Audience can use six microphones and a 6.1 surround system to amplify any kind of sound they wish to produce.
The whole sonic matter is managed by a Pure Data-based software for generative music developed by the author, which interacts with the audience processing sounds in real-time, analyzing the input signals and generating new sounds and textures out of the collected data.

An endless sonic data flow which, once started, will live and grow beyond the time-space of the action. Generative electroacoustic music for non-musicians.
If you’re in the city you’re very welcome to freely join our self-organized orchestra and contribute to the creation of our brand-new collective soundscape.

Live at Netaudio Berlin 2009

For those of you who hang around Berlin, I’ll be participating to the almighty Netaudio Festival – day program – with a showcase of my audiovisual performance for augmented bass guitar ‘I C::ntr::l Nature’ (check the project here) entirely made and performed with PureData.
I’ll be performing on Friday from 14.15 to 14.45h and for the remaining 30 minutes I’ll be explaining the functionality of ‘C::NTR::L’, the free software I developed for the performance . The software allows you to transform your standard musical instrument in an augmented audiovisual controller, it’s published under GPL license so free to be used and modified. If you’re interested you’re very welcome to drop by.
The festival will take place from 8th to 11th October at the wellknown Maria am Ostbahnhof (Mao).

I was really glad to get to know about my selection since Netaudio festival is the bulwark of free CC-licensed music, so it represents kind of _must_ for me.

From the 8th to the 11th of October 2009, Netaudio Berlin will be gathering the international netaudio community for a four-day music and conference festival in Berlin, under the title “East meets West”. 2009 will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. We recall pictures of hands reaching out to pull people from both sides up onto the Berlin wall. The event will take place at Maria, a venue situated immediately on the former Berlin ‘death strip’ once dividing the city and the world into eastern and western hemispheres.

In recent years a netaudio landscape has emerged in the countries of Eastern Europe. Speakers, artists and netlabel managers from Eastern and Western Europe as well as from the USA are invited to find out more about the needs and possibilities, challenges and chances of netaudio under the various cultural frameworks and to discuss new opportunities for networking and collaboration across borders and cultures.

Italian premiere at roBOT festival 2009

Next audiovisual concert coming up in Bologna, Italy.

On 19th October I will be performing the third version of the performance for augmented bass guitar and butterfly I C::ntr::l Nature during roBOT festival at Palazzo Re Enzo. This will be the italian premiere of the brand new version of the audiovisual performance (recently presented in Brasil at Pure Data Convention), so don’t miss it!
The festival provide an interesting lineup, featuring a pool of selected audiovisual artist from Italy and Europe including Saul Saguatti, Ericailcane, Pixelnoizz, Vj Hash, Ape5 and a party time hosted by some big names of the scene such as Tim Exile, Carl Craig and many others. 3rd international PureData Convention 09

Next week I’m flying to Sao Paulo, Brasil. I’ve been selected to perform at the 3rd International Pure Data Convention ’09 with the work ‘I C::ntr::l Nature’ – solo audiovisual performance for augmented bass guitar.

The work is completely produced and performed with the self-designed software ‘C::NTR::L 1.2 Beta’ - PureData based software for real-time audiovisual improvvisation which exploits physical computing technology.
The software is free for download and use, check this page.

It will be an honour for me to show the results of my research in the physical computing enviroment and to contribute to the success of this 3rd convention, but above all i’m expecting a great experience, full of contents, inspiration and new ideas.

I’m specially looking forward to attend to the series of conferences focused on the Pd development where also Miller Puckette – the creator of Pd – will hold a conference about Multiprocessing for Pd.

“The International Convention for Puredata (Pd) is a periodic event that started in 2004 and is the most important event of the community of developers and enthusiasts of Pd. Pd is a programming language used for the development of interactive applications, allowing the manipulation of data flow in real-time.

As a free open source software, the developer’s community is vast and independent, and is characterized by having a rich and eterogeneous profile formed by researchers, developers and designers with a strong interaction and internal productivity.

There are several projects that use Pd in the area of robotics, psychoacoustic, new physical interfaces and open-hardware, artificial intelligence and pattern recognition signal, artistic and commercial projects, among others. S-Block Festival – Advanced Music and Live Audiovisual Art

I’ve been invited to participate to the first edition of S-Block Festival - international festival of Advanced Music, Audiovisual Art and Performances - at Interventionsraum in the centre of Stuttgart, DE.

The festival will take place on 19-20 June and will showcase many different projects of experimental music, live videos and neo-theather, highlighting the soulful artistic local scene plus guest international artists.

I’ll perform ‘I C::ntr::l Nature’ solo audiovisual performance for augmented E-bass guitar - recently performed at NEMO festival in Paris and Ausklang Festival in Hamburg. The performance is powered by the self-designed software C::NTR::L (released as public beta version with GPL license infos here).

I’m glad to come back to Stuttgart with this project because last year i performed its first demo version exactly there in Stuttgart during the monthly Max.Experimentell event and it has been an hyper-stimulating experience for the further developments of the performance.

I highly recomend to join this event since it’s going to be a new important mirror of the most recent researches in Live and Mixed Media.

Body gestures deconstruct the whole life cycle of the caterpillar, making the microscopic world of the butterfly become an immersive and surreal ambient, sometimes violent and compulsive.

Performance powered by C::NTR::L 1.2 Beta – free, openSource software for live audiovisual performance exploiting physical computing, developed By Marco Donnarumma.

Among the other artists performing at this festival Quayola, Mira Calix, CHDH, AntiVJ+Principles of Geometry, Incite/, Frank Bretschneider, Byetone.

Le Cube has earned a reputation as one of the most innovative places on the cultural scene by performing essential missions such as educating the public, providing access to the new multimedia creation applications and discovering and promoting talented young practitioners of the digital arts. Through its programme inviting us to discover new fields of artistic expression, Le Cube aims to help the public discover a field of contemporary creation that gives priority to openness and dynamism.

The Némo festival is back at the Forum des Images, where it began eleven years ago, and we have a very exciting line-up in store for you! There are now five sections to showcase the best of cutting edge cinematic forms and new media art.

Since February 2008 I’ve been working on a new musical project called ‘Kuoyàh‘, exploring dubstep/2step/garage sonorities. For those who know me this could sounds a strange news, but it came almost naturally. Some months ago I was a bit stuck with music productions, and i started composing some tracks without thinking much about what i was doing, only trying to express myself freely, forgetting my personal clichè (for a while..).

The result was unexpectedly interesting and i decided to try to send some demos over UK and Germany without focusing only on dubstep professionals.
In the end after some months I got in touch with Dj Oslek (owner of the upcoming, futuristic Frijsfo Beats label UK – Dub, Garage, 2step) who showed interest for my music and since then i decided to give a name – Kuoyàh as above – to this new side of my work.

The project went forward and now i am really glad to announce Kuoyàh debut on Frijsfo Beats. It will be a 3 tracks Ep called ‘Chase the Comedown‘. It will be the first of many digital only releases from the label and it explores – in a definetely S.A.D way – Dubstep/Electronica and hybrid styles.
The buzz around my work went totally out of my expectations and many artists from the dubstep scene supported my work with airtime in their radio shows (such as SUB.FM award winning dubstep radio).
So thanks to Bunzer0, Noyeahno&Warlock (of the great Rag&Bone label), Insectmind, Whistla and Forensics.

“As Kuoyàh, Marco shows us the fruits of his production work that has been influenced heavily by dubstep, garage, dub, and obviously his diverse musical background. This EP comprises some of Kuoyàh’s jittery, warped, cold dubstep beats, which quickly morph into hybrid style…
Fans of PointB, Pinch, Lewis Hunter, Ital Tek, Innasekt, Combat Recordings, Vex’d, Milanese should be interested to hear these tracks.”

The EP should come out in March/April and distributed on Boomkat / Bleep.

On two subsequent evenings six to eight artists and groups perform in the movie theater. C::NTR::L AV augmented bass guitar improvisation from TheSAD on Vimeo.

Live action of audiovisual improvisation.
This work is performed with the electric bass guitar and the custom-made software C::NTR::L, Human-Computer Interface for physical computing i developed in Pure Data.
This was the first time i test the version 1.0 of C::NTR::L (feat. audiovideo modules and efx triggered in real-time by your partiture), and i can say it seems it works pretty good.
But please, share your ideas about it…im trying to develop the software for public use (also for no-pd’r).

I keep on with my thesis about the multimedia creation and new A/V formats which will be ready for the nest year. Now, after a world overview, i’m working on the spanish live visual scene.

I didn’t know people from the Hangar in Barcellona and many of the partecipants to the summercamp, which is a great chance to know each other and share. Here we are in a big empty building, fullfilled of tables where everybody is working, alone or in groups.

We find working areas for the creation of hardware, the puredata community, video maker, and streaming set of the talks and many performers, everything inside this new museum of contemporary art hosting exhibitions of national and international artists.

LIVE VIDEO PERFORMERS, VISUAL ARTISTS AND VJ MEETING
29 30 31 may + 01 june – Roma

LPM – Live Performers Meeting: international meeting of live audio/video performers, visual artists and vjs is back with a new (fifth) edition.
From the 29th of may to the 1th of june 2008, in the padiglione 9C of the Ex Mattatoio of Testaccio in Rome, there will be workshops, showcases and live-video performances, but most of all, a space created to explore the artform and connect the practitioners making it happen.

The 2007 edition had 295 artists registered from the following countries: France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Poland, United Kingdom, Hungary, Austria, Turkey, Argentina, Portugal, Mexico, Macedonia, Israel, Lithuania, Australia, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Algeria. 26000 visitors during the 4 days of the meeting and the preview at Palazzo delle Esposizioni.

It’s unbelieveble but this was my first gig in Milan, my damned “Hometown”.
Don’t want to bore you with the explanation why i didn’t play there before…it’s a long, italian story..
Anyway the night was great. All my old friends came there just to hear me, and i was so so so happy seeing them all.
I had some technical trouble but in the end, people seems to have appreciate end enjoyed the show.. and this is the most important to me!

!S.A.D! Live in Paris

Right now i’m in Paris with my dear friend G-mO. We’re setting up two gigs where we’ll show our project ‘Shut Down G8′, a live report with original shooting from last G8 in Germany scored by my insane music.
The place where everything is grown it’s an amazing, cool venue in Ponte de Sevres called Les Pixel Traversaux, run by YroYto, french video-artist.

I think one of the best place i’ve seen where to enjoy a real audio/visual experience.

European Tour 2008 has started in january/february with a couple of concerts in Berlin where my a/v work ‘I C::ntr::l Nature’ has been much appreciated and commented.
A lot of new ideas and inputs coming out and the work is going on!
I want to say special thanks to Dr.Nojoke, Konik Polny, Fred, Tobias, RQM, Rina and Saimon and all Visual Berlin crew. All you has helped me in spending really great times there and to live better the amazing Berlin.
