“Want to turn your mobile device into a musical instrument? Or equip your game with interactive audio, rather than canned samples? You can do it with Pure Data (Pd), an open source visual programming environment that lets you manipulate digital audio in real time. This concise book shows you how to use Pd—with help from the libpd library—as an easily embeddable and widely portable sound engine.”

I’m glad to see this archive available on-line again.
Here’s a forwarded message by Derek Holzer.

“After a 10 month hiatus, the Soundtransit project is back thanks to the generous hosting support of Turbulence.org.

SoundTransit is a collaborative, online community dedicated to field recording and phonography. Phonography is the art of recording sounds from the environment around us, with an emphasis on the unintentional sounds which often go unnoticed in our daily lives. An international community of phonographers collect and share their recordings, with interests ranging from recordings of natural or urban environments to improvised situations or soundwalks to the resonance of solid objects or the Earth’s atmosphere

In the BOOK section of this site, you can plan a sonic journey through various locations recorded around the world. In the SEARCH section, you can search the database for specific sounds by member artists from many different places. If you are a member of SoundTransit, you can also CONTRIBUTE your recordings for others to enjoy. The Creative Commons Attribution license encourages the sharing and reuse of all sounds on this website.

During 2010, our previous host in the Netherlands quadrupled the rent for our server, forcing us to move or consider closing. Turbulence.org graciously offered their support, and during 2011 we’ve been working together with them, getting everything up and running again.

Please visit us at

http://turbulence.org/soundtransit

to hear our collection of over 2000 recordings from 471 artists around the world, experience our unique way of traveling via sound and find out how you can help the SoundTransit project.

Huge thanks go out to Helen Thorington, Jo-Anne Green and Jesse Gilbert of Turbulence for their kindness and patience!”

Pillow Talk – a series of projection for performance documentaries, organized by Japanese media artist Yamaguchi Noriko.
“Performances cannot be shared by people of all the time, however much appreciation they received. Since they are consumed immediately and become “something that happened” very soon, their records should be all the more important. However, documentary movies of performing arts have not had frequent chances to be projected.
This exhibition is to create that opportunity for ourselves. Lying on the floor of a comfortable space with high ceiling, why donʼ t you enjoy these unexplored movies with us?”

Pillow Talk #3 took place last Saturday at the KCUA, Kyoto City University of Arts, Japan.
The event included screenings of 3 performances hosted at this year WRO Biennale; namely, my audiovisual work I C::ntr::l Nature, along with works by Istvan Kantor, Megan May Daalder. The programme of Pillow Talk also included works by Ichihara Hiroko, Sako Kojima and Tomohiko Kyogoku.

The Pixelache Software of the Year 2012 title is this time given to din – din is noise.

din is a Free software musical instrument exclusively for the GNU/ Linux operating system made by the Indian programmer S. Jagannathan.
din – din is noise presents an innovative way of generating live music from a simple visual interface based on Bezier curves, and is a good example of how creative and DIY technologies can foster new approaches and solutions that escapes the leading rules of the software industry.

It forgets history,
To not repeat it.
It doesnt hide analog music hardware,
In digital music software.

You had pulse, sine, triangle and sawtooth,
And went forth and made electronic music.

Now there is just the Bezier curve.

Pixelache Software of the Year is an initiative by Pixelache Network, started in 2008. The chosen software for the first year was Animata, a live animation software by Kitchen Budapest. In 2010 it was divided between the live CD distributions pure:dyne by GOTO10 and APODIO by APO33.

MEDIA ART NEEDS GLOBAL NETWORKED ORGANISATION & SUPPORT –
International Declaration

State of Affairs

“Digital technology has fundamentally changed the way art is made. Over the last forty years, Media Art has become a significant part of our networked information society. Although there are well-attended international festivals, collaborative research projects, exhibitions and database documentation resources, Media Art research is still marginal in universities, museums and archives. It remains largely under-resourced in our core cultural institutions.

As a result of rapid changes in technology, many major works made even 10 years ago can no longer be shown or are disappearing without a trace. If this situation is not addressed, we face losing an art form that is a central part of our post-industrial digital culture. To date, systematic global preservation and documentation campaigns do not exist. Many important online documentation and research projects are also disappearing from the web. As they falter, we risk losing their valuable material forever. Contemporary scientific research relies on access to shared data. The same is true of the Arts and Humanities, which lack a concerted international policy for sustainability and support of the digital heritage, such as exists partly in the natural sciences…”

I Cntrl Nature (Marco Donnarumma, 2009) is an unambiguous, synesthetic action of audiovisual improvisation.The live act represents the sarcastic celebration of the human instinct finally able to govern the nature. The improvised body gestures of the performer sculpt in real-time the soundscape and the moving images. The living creature on the screen reacts to the movements of the performer on stage in a mutual agreement and attraction.
Vague Terrain 19: Schematic as Score
Online 02 May 2011
http://vagueterrain.net/journal19

Over the past few years, a strong reaction against the sterile world of laptop sound and video has inspired a new interest in analog processes, and a fresh exploration of the pioneers of the electronic arts during the pre-digital era of the 1960s and 1970s. Artists and inventors such as Nam June Paik, Steina & Woody Vasulka, Don Buchla, Serge Tcherepnin, Dan Sandin and David Tudor all constructed their own unique instruments long before similar tools became commercially available or freely downloadable–often through a long, rigorous process of self-education in electronics.

John Cage once quipped that Serge Tcherepnin’s synthesizer system was “the best musical composition that Serge had ever made”, and it is precisely Cage’s reformulation of the concert score from a list of deterministic note values to a set of indeterministic possibilities that allowed the blurring of lines between instrument-builder and music composer that followed.

The current issue of Vague Terrain, curated and edited by Derek Holzer, features an eclectic range of young, contemporary artists who have revisited and expanded upon the philosophies and works of this earlier generation. Operating at the extreme edges of the DIY electronics scene, builder-composers such as Peter Blasser, Jason R. Butcher, Moritz Ellerich, Lesley Flanigan, Martin Howse, the Loud Objects (Kunal Gupta, Tristan Perich and Katie Shima), Jessica Rylan and Synchronator (Bas van Koolwijk & Geert-Jan Prins) all represent some of the most radical and idiosyncratic artistic approaches to creative circuitry of the moment. Their compositions take the form of systems which provide a map of what is possible, but lack a prescribed route on how to get there. The discovery—-and the risk—-is left to the moment of the performance.

I forward this message originally posted by Simon Yuill to the Electron Club list.
I completely agree with his thoughts, and warmly suggest you to spend 3 minutes reading the open letter, to better realize what’s going on.
Thanks.

Digital arts organisations have been especially hit by the cuts in funding with many groups who are internationally recognised as important pioneers having 100% cuts. This includes Access Space in Sheffield, the longest running hacklab space in the UK who have done more than anyone here to encourage the use of Free and Open Source Software and recycled technologies amongst the arts and community media. They helped Electron Club out when we started along with a few other projects in Scotland (such as Radius who did the Glasgow Green Map project).

PikselSavers – screensavers that makes a difference!

PikselSavers is a screening programme of short movies and software art curated by the Piksel festival in Bergen, Norway. The programme was selected based on an open call for participation and includes 10 contributions from artists working in a wide range of digital media and techniques. All works are made using Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS).

PikselSavers take the screensaver as a point of departure and inspirational springboard. They are videos and software based on the screensaver format ? short audiovisual (non)narratives made for endless looping. Possible thematic fields includes but are not limited to: sustainable resource allocation, renewable technologies, energy harvesting, fair trade hardware, free content, open access, DIY economy, shared development.

PikselSavers was comissioned by and first shown at the biennial for art and technology in Trondheim, Meta.Morf 2010 – New.Brave.World!, arranged by TEKS – Trondheim Electronic Arts Centre.

I just ended a new work residency at Inspace, home to a joint research partnership between the School of Informatics and New Media Scotland.
During the residency, me and Brendan F Doyle (Production Sound Engineering) worked on a participatory Musicircus which included a massive, reactive sonic system for 8 Xth Sense biosensors and 8 audio channels.
The piece was premiered two days ago on 15th March during a public event which gathered quite a good amount of people from different backgrounds, music, sound design, informatics, hackers and general public.

It was awesome to see how the audience positively reacted to this novel paradigm of musical performance for muscle sounds, namely generating and controlling electroacoustic sounds and music moving and contracting muscles. After some initial – and expected – disorientation, everybody started realizing how to use the sensors and how to interact with the system, only then the actual Musicircus started.

The event was pretty successful, everything worked out fairly smoothly – except the few things which always “have to” get broken just before the opening – and we received several excited and stimulating feedback. Overall a great and satisfying experience.

During the same night, I also performed my new solo sonic piece Music for Flesh II, for augmented muscle sounds and Xth Sense technology. The acoustic capabilities of Inspace were challenging: glass walls all around, an empty floor which acts as a resonant shield, and interesting sonic reflections happening all around the space. I need to thank again my colleague Brendan for his great work with the sound engineering of the venue and his live mixing during my performance.

Chris Scott (who took the heading picture above during a rehearsal at Inspace) documented with awesome pictures the whole residency, so hopefully soon I’ll post a report, with pics, audio and video!

Tomorrow I’m leaving for a weekend in Ireland; it will be good to change environment for a bit.
The 2011 Pure Data mini-conference is about to kick off at the Trinity College, Dublin. The event is fairly small, but I’m glad that our colleagues at Trinity College made this UK Pd happening possible.

I’ll be presenting a paper which describes the present findings of my research about embodied interaction and augmented muscle sounds. In the evening there will be some Pd concerts and I’ll perform Music for Flesh I, my latest piece for DIY biosensing wearable hardware and Pure Data-based software. An early demo presentation can be viewed here.

On Saturday there will be a workshop by Joao Pais, which you might already know for his jmmmp library for Pd-extended and other Pd goodies. Joao will describe the Pd data structures and their different applications, from real time score drawing to GUI enhancements. I look forward to his workshop, being that Pd data structures are known for their great potential, but is often difficult to gather proper information about their use.

Rich Duckworth is one of the organizer and here’s his blog where you will possibly find some updates about the post-conference.

A provoking new work by italian duo Paolo Cirio and Alessandro Ludovico (Neural.it), mixing reality, social virtuality to possibly shedding some light on some of the most subtly vicious behaviours of our present society.
I have to say I was just expecting such kind of work to come out sooner or later, and this project fulfilled all my expectations.
Take a look by yourself. Follow an excerpt from the original press release.
Make sure you read the comprehensive information about the concept and development on their website.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Press Release, February 10th, 2010. Somewhere in Europe.
* Face to Facebook.
http://face-to-facebook.net
Face to Facebook is a project by Paolo Cirio and Alessandro Ludovico, who wrote special software to steal 1 million public profiles from Facebook, filtering them through face-recognition software and posting the resulting 250,000 profiles (categorized by facial expression) on a dating website called Lovely-Faces.com.
The project was launched at Transmediale, the annual festival for art and digital culture in Berlin, on February 2nd, in the form of installation displaying a selection of 1,716 pictures of unaware Facebook users, an explanatory video and a diagram detailing the whole process. The Lovely-Faces.com website went online on the same day.
Pd’er David Doukhan just released cw_binaural~. It looks a very useful and well coded implementation for Pd lovers, I’m going to give it a try asap.
Follow the announcement by David.
“It’s been a long time since PDCON09, and I’ve been quite busy. I finally cleaned up my code, did some improvements, and a user-friendly documentation for the external cw_binaural~ .
In few words, cw_binaural~ is a binaural synthesis external allowing:
*the use of any hrtf database (listen, cipic, …)
* the simultaneous use of different hrtfs
* the choice of the interpolation method used (all pass/pure delay decomposition for better ITD estimation or no decomposition)
* the length of the HRIR considered
* the filtering method (spectral, temporal)
* the method used for the pure delay
Precompiled external (Linux, Mac Intel & Windows) and doc are now available at http://perso.limsi.fr/doukhan/cw_binaural~.tgz
The external sources are available on pd svn: trunk/externals/ddoukhan/cw_binaural~
The external has been initially described in: CW_binaural~: a binaural synthesis external for Pure Data, David Doukhan and Anne Sedes, PDCON09
There have been few improvements since that time that are described in the example patches.
The aim of that external is to be as user friendly as possible, so feel free to tells any remarks helping to improve the external or the help patches, or to ask any question concerning its use.
Hoping you will enjoy it!”
I’ll be giving a talk and demo of PureData at the next Edinburgh Linux User Group Meeting on Thursday 3rd February.
The meeting is held at the Edinburgh Conference and Training Centre, St Mary’s Street Edinburgh (map at http://tinyurl.com/5r6ebgp ) and starts at 7:30pm. Tea, Coffee and biscuits are available free of charge.
Creativity, hacktive behaviours, self-taught quasi-programming and new media openness.
These keywords quite well summarize the personal artistic research I’ll be presenting at Edlug. From a concept to its practical realization, an artistic work is always a mixture of theories and technical skills and often the hardest task is to keep the work enough close to the original idea which it was generated from.
In these days digital multimedia tools are notably contributing to enhance, and somehow change, the human capability of creation; they can expand our abilities, be thought-provoking and change viewpoints on values and social idioms. This stands true unless we consider how capitalism affects innovators and innovation and the modalities by which we undergo a capital-guerrilla dissemination of closed source tools. In this perspective creativity looses its charachter of authenticness. However, a worldwide actual community of makers, developers, artists and geeks works relentlessy to provide an awesome and infinite set of free, open tools by which an artist can express a creative message and provide a socio-political declaration of intellectual and technical independence.
My first approach to Pure Data dates back to 2004; during these years my work encompassed diverse topics such as biosensing technology, musical and theatrical performance, participatory practice and semantic hacking of Internet data set. These works would have not been possible without a growing awareness of the radical importance of openness of tools and techniques and I hope to provide a comprehensive insight about the possibilities and the challenges that an hacktive creative behaviour can foster.
Talk will be followed by a demo presentation of a biosensing framework (hardware/software) for gestural control of music and responsive milieux I’m currently developing (with the support of The University of Edinburgh and the Dorkbot ALBA group at the Edinburgh Hacklab). Participants will be able to wear the devices and make some noise!
Original message from the Thimbl project team
Hello! It’s been a long time since I’ve sent out a email newsletter, hasn’t it?
As some of you may know, I’ve gotten drawn into the world of social media, and have been hanging around in places like Facebook and Twitter. There are a few reasons for this, one, to explore those platforms as ways to communicate, but also to very large degree, to understand the enemy. Much of what’s wrong with Web2.0 is covered in the Telekommunist Manifesto (
/////// Don’t be a Twit, it feels good to be fingered!
The platform is called Thimbl, and it also has a manifesto all it’s own:
http://www.thimbl.net/manifesto.html
Thimbl is a microblogging platformed implemented as a specialized Finger & SSH client.
Please take a look! We welcome feedback and participation, the Thimbl project is just beginning, we need your to help spread the word.
What’s really great is that Thimbl has been nominated for the Open Web Award from Transmediale and the Mozilla Foundation, so we’ll be hanging around the OpenZone at Transmediale spreading the word and answering questions.
Winning the Open Web Award would go along way to kickstarting Thimbl, and we really need your help here! You can vote for us! Voting for the Award is being done on the drumbeat.org platform, Thimbl is very new, and is up against two projects that are far better known, so we’re really need your vote. Please sign up to drumbeat and vote for Thimbl!
Here’s how: http://www.drumbeat.org/content/how-vote-drumbeat-thimbl
Also, we have a nice little video to introduce you to Thimbl, you can see it on the home page of our drumbeat project.
http://www.drumbeat.org/project/thimbl-decentralized-micro-blogging-platform
And after you vote for Thimbl, please make a comment on drumbeat, the Transmediale jury is very interested in hearing why you like the project and so are we!
Voting ends Feb 4th, so the time to vote is now! Also, please pass this on, share, blog, tweet, etc. Help us kickstart decentralized social media! With your
help, we can make this manifesto for the open web heard!
Got Questions? Wanna Help?
We’ve also launched a public community forum for the Thimbl project:
http://www.thimbl.net/community.html
Come by and say Hi!
