GISS Mp3 v 1.0.0

This is the first GISS Audio Streamer application in .mp3 format as this is the format supported on any version of Android.

You should enter your stream parameters and type ‘Start’ to start your stream.

Synopsis

Enter the stream server parameters in the main screen, than go to ‘Stream quality’ screen and enter the parameters you request :

Audio bitrate : the bitrate of your stream.
Audio channels : the number of requested channels ( usually mono is enough with a phone ).
Mp3 quality : the quality of encoding from 1 to 9.
Audio rate : the rate of the recording, on small models this should be put to a lower value of 8000 Hz, as a higher rate requires more processing power.
Finally, enter your stream metadata in the ‘Meta Data’ screen :

Name : name of the stream
Description : description of the stream
Genre : genre
More info : an url that describes more your project.
Then, click the ‘Start’ button and the stream should start.

Notes

On small android models, use a low value for recording ( 8000 Hz ), it has been tested with this value on an HTC Tattoo and was working fine.

The code published here can be studied, modified, used by anyone that provides all the original credits and sources in derivative projects.

Book: NEW ART/SCIENCE AFFINITIES

I’m glad to see this publication out there. From the press release:
“The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University and the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry have co-published “New Art/Science Affinities,” a 190-page book on contemporary artists that was written and designed in one week by four authors (Andrea Grover, Régine Debatty, Claire Evans and Pablo Garcia) and two designers (Luke Bulman and Jessica Young of Thumb).

“New Art/Science Affinities,” which focuses on artists working at the intersection of art, science and technology, was produced by a collaborative authoring process known as a “book sprint.” Derived from “code sprinting,” a method in which software developers gather in a single room to work intensely on an open source project for a certain period of time, the term book sprint describes the quick, collective writing of a topical book.

The book includes meditations, interviews, diagrams, letters and manifestos on maker culture, hacking, artist research, distributed creativity, and technological and speculative design. Chapters include Program Art or Be Programmed, Subvert! Citizen Science, Artists in White Coats and Latex Gloves, The Maker Moment and The Overview Effect.”

Along with ideas and critical analysis, the book includes 60 international artists among which Agnes Meyer-Brandis, Atelier Van Lieshout, Brandon Ballengée, Free Art and Technology (F.A.T.), Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, The Institute for Figuring, Aaron Koblin, Machine Project, Openframeworks, C.E.B. Reas, Philip Ross, Tomás Saraceno, SymbioticA, Jer Thorp, Marius Watz and myself (with the work Golden Shield Music).

This is absolutely brilliant, if you are a fan of noise synths you can’t miss this one.

New Audio Release: VVAA: RmxN on Sinewaves

I’ve been working on a very special track for this release produced by the almighty experimental label Sinewaves.
Sinewaves have been spreading for 10 years now the most interesting music by new and old italian experimental generation of musicians, improvisers and sound designers. And all the music has always been released for free!

This album is something quite special. Grab it until 1st May or order one of the 100 limited CD-R copies.

Sixteen tracks dedicated to the 10th Sinewaves’ anniversary; sixteen artists worked to a track which was modified and remixed by another artist. Each track is the remix of the previous one.
This process allowed every musician to add or delete sounds, noises and effects, “misreading” or “misinterpreting” the previous track, just like the children’s game “broken telephone”.

cw_binaural~ for Pure Data released!

Pd’er David Doukhan just released cw_binaural~. It looks a very useful and well coded implementation for Pd lovers, I’m going to give it a try asap.
Follow the announcement by David.

“It’s been a long time since PDCON09, and I’ve been quite busy. I finally cleaned up my code, did some improvements, and a user-friendly documentation for the external cw_binaural~ .

In few words, cw_binaural~ is a binaural synthesis external allowing:

*the use of any hrtf database (listen, cipic, …)
* the simultaneous use of different hrtfs
* the choice of the interpolation method used (all pass/pure delay decomposition for better ITD estimation or no decomposition)
* the length of the HRIR considered
* the filtering method (spectral, temporal)
* the method used for the pure delay

Precompiled external (Linux, Mac Intel & Windows) and doc are now available at http://perso.limsi.fr/doukhan/cw_binaural~.tgz
The external sources are available on pd svn: trunk/externals/ddoukhan/cw_binaural~
The external has been initially described in: CW_binaural~: a binaural synthesis external for Pure Data, David Doukhan and Anne Sedes, PDCON09

I gladly announce the publication of Vague Terrain 15: .microsound, including my piece Sand Horyzon – a composition excerpt of live improvisational computing in Pd using an augmented electric bass guitar.
The whole release brings you two compilations of fine experimental music, text and videos created by the community behind .microsound list (which has just celebrated its ten years) and selected by american composer Kim Cascone.
As Kim states in his article:

“The .microsound community, drawing from areas as discontinuous as Gilles Deleuze, Curtis Roads and the Aphex Twin, is a ‘body without organs’ in Deleuzian parlance; an amorphous object, a fluid changing shape as its poured into different containers…”
“…In order to bracket the various styles of sound art and music I used the Deleuzian concepts of ‘smooth space’ and ‘striated space.’ Striated space is where I put all the pieces that made use of gesture and beats while ‘smooth space’ is where I put pieces that made use of texture and internal movement. But within those two categories what constitutes a .microsound-sounding piece becomes blurred…”

About .microsound: “.microsound is not a “genre” mailing list, since this proliferation has occurred largely without regard for stylistic boundary. instead, .microsound presents itself as a forum for the discussion and exploration of a more general “digital aesthetic” manifesting across a wide variety of styles and disciplines — from academic computer music to post-industrial noise to experimental ambient and post-techno.”

“After his excellent remix for Sully’s “Phonebox” EP last summer, Frijsfo Beats is delighted to provide a home for Point B’s latest and best experiments on the fringes of dubstep and UK garage. Point B previously enjoyed a swell of grass-roots appreciation for his material on leading UK electro label SCSI-AV – a sharp, intricately produced dancefloor twelve and an extremely thoughtful full-length. 2007′s EP for Stormfield’s Combat Recordings fused his techniques and sound palette with the rhythmic genius of two-step, an idea expanded and developed to its full potential on his first full Frijsfo release.

Opening track “Detritus” is built around an unbreakable backbone of kicks, woodblocks and dense sub-bass growls. Tweaked techno stabs sustain the pressure until Point B drops a mean (but tastefully executed) snippet of Distance-style bass guitar and an atmospheric post-Skream melody.

“No Smokes” is a tense meeting between two-stepping beat patterns and stiff electro-funk, illustrating Point B’s distinctiveness. Graceful soundtrack synths smooth things over somewhat, only to get re-jigged for mashed-up dancefloors by fragments of a caustic acid line.

“Isocity Meter” boasts an even brisker, more invigorating arrangement, dominated by huge, metallic bass tones that sound as if they’re being collided and yanked apart by an elastic sense of rhythm.

Finally, Italian Frijsfo discovery Kuoyàh contributes an unbelievable remix of “Someone Else’s Past”. His trademark loose, unevenly oscillating beat constructions are fascinating in their own right, but take away nothing from the rolling, dark two-step vibe. Any DJ who feels a connection to dubstep’s more creative eras should be playing this.”

New free release: Ausklang live recordings

I’m glad to announce the official release of TheSAD’s fifth solo audio work: the live recordings of my concert at the Ausklang festival in Hamburg on the 28th December 2008.
The music/sounds you will listen to are the result of free improvisation exclusively based on the Electric Bass guitar, processed in real-time with C::NTR::L, the free software i developed in PureData which transform a standard musical instrument in an augmented tool for audio/video processing, thanks to physical computing.
No previous composition neither further editing, everything is improvised and recorded live.

SAD goes UK – Kuoyah debut

Since February 2008 I’ve been working on a new musical project called ‘Kuoyàh‘, exploring dubstep/2step/garage sonorities. For those who know me this could sounds a strange news, but it came almost naturally. Some months ago I was a bit stuck with music productions, and i started composing some tracks without thinking much about what i was doing, only trying to express myself freely, forgetting my personal clichè (for a while..).

The result was unexpectedly interesting and i decided to try to send some demos over UK and Germany without focusing only on dubstep professionals.
In the end after some months I got in touch with Dj Oslek (owner of the upcoming, futuristic Frijsfo Beats label UK – Dub, Garage, 2step) who showed interest for my music and since then i decided to give a name – Kuoyàh as above – to this new side of my work.

The project went forward and now i am really glad to announce Kuoyàh debut on Frijsfo Beats. It will be a 3 tracks Ep called ‘Chase the Comedown‘. It will be the first of many digital only releases from the label and it explores – in a definetely S.A.D way – Dubstep/Electronica and hybrid styles.
The buzz around my work went totally out of my expectations and many artists from the dubstep scene supported my work with airtime in their radio shows (such as SUB.FM award winning dubstep radio).
So thanks to Bunzer0, Noyeahno&Warlock (of the great Rag&Bone label), Insectmind, Whistla and Forensics.

“As Kuoyàh, Marco shows us the fruits of his production work that has been influenced heavily by dubstep, garage, dub, and obviously his diverse musical background. This EP comprises some of Kuoyàh’s jittery, warped, cold dubstep beats, which quickly morph into hybrid style…

New release from the most elegant, sofisticated and brave net-label based in Italy, Sinewaves.it in corporation with Controfase.it.

Isolated sounds in a dilated space, motionless, cold, distant, which generate different gradations of density. The heavy intervention of the tubax, the cold voice of the flute, the strikes of the glockenspiel, the dry sounds of a pianoforte which find it hard to end his release. The words of the italian poet Giacomo Leopardi give life to the sounds: “Che fai tu, luna in ciel, dimmi che fai, silenziosa luna…”

Four musicians have released their own interpretation of the original track, all of them starting from the same sonic material. Four visions of the same obscure world evocated by the poet.

Finally the collaboration album ‘Schizophrenic Spider’ w/ Kenji Siratori – japanese cyber punk writer – is OUT NOW on Juno Download, released by MODR (MusicaOltranza Digital Release).

This work , really important to me, is totally obscure and warm at the same time. Industrial atmospheres, screams, scattered iron plates, flesh and spirit.
This is what you will feel coming out from the sonic texture created by the japanese poetry and my black demons.
