CALL FOR EXISTING WORKS

Make It Yourself is an exhibition of inventive Arduino and DIY electronic-circuitry projects to accompany the major solo exhibition Recorders by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer at Manchester Art Gallery between 18 September 2010 and 30 January 2011.

A rapidly expanding community of people worldwide is taking advantage of new, cheaper technology and a growing pool of shared knowledge to make things for themselves – useful things, clever things, silly things, unique things. Make It Yourself is a ‘small but perfectly formed’ show of a handpicked half-dozen of these hand-made devices.

We are now accepting submissions of existing Arduino and DIY electronic-circuitry projects from artists, hobbyists, hackers, DIY musicians and anyone interested in making things for themselves wishing to exhibit their work as part of Make It Yourself.

We are looking for pieces that reveal and demonstrate:

* unique devices born out of imagination or happy accident
* how everyday artifacts actually work
* custom-made tools born out of a frustration that nothing else quite does the job
* modified consumer products that now do something their manufacturers never conceived of

Overall we are looking for inventive projects that demonstrate a wide range of function and form, simplicity and complexity, humour and intent.

We expect creators of selected works to provide a project ‘info pack’ of design schematics, component lists, code and step-by-step assembly instructions.

Deadline
Monday, 13 September 2010.

Notification
Friday 17 September 2010.

Entry forms
Download full details, entry forms and terms as a PDF here

About three weeks ago me and Ioann Maria held a two days, free Pure Data workshop at Electron Club.
I gave an introduction of the graphical programming framework of Pd, audio and video real-time processing libraries and their possible applications, Ioann showed her DIY HRM – heart rate monitor – and eventually explained how to use Arduino in combination with Pd.
We had great times with folks in Glasgow and we are going to gather again this week for our second Pure Data Scots Users MeetUp. Come and join us if you’re around, the meeting is open to beginners, practitioners, passionates whoever might be interested in spending few hours chatting, patching and making some noise.

I’d like to thank Simon Yull for his support in the organization of the workshop, the CCA staff for their help and all the people who showed up.

#3: Art, Activism and Recuperation

The latest issue of Arnolfini’s Concept Store journal, themed Art, Activism and Recuperation is out now.

This third edition examines the wider contemporary relationship between art and politics. What are the power relations between art, activists and cultural institutions? Who ultimately benefits from these relationships? What critical role can art and/or activism really have in a situation where radicalism is absorbed by the mainstream? And under such conditions what are effective strategies of opposition? But, above all, the question asked by Concept Store #3 is, what is to be done (with art?)

Contributors: Glenn Adamson, Tatiana Bazzichelli, Franco Berardi (Bifo), Thomas Hirschhorn, Brian Holmes, Ele Carpenter, Freee, Esther Leslie, Geoff Cox, James Panton, Institute for the Art&Practice of Dissent at Home, Platform, Lars Bang Larsen, Sarat Maharaj, Nav Haq, Sevphen Shukaitis, Tom Trevor, Mark Wallinger. Designed by Message & Meaning.

Concept Store is a journal published twice-yearly by Arnolfini, focusing on critical issues of contemporary art and their relationship to wider cultural, social and political contexts. While Concept Store reflects upon ideas explored within Arnolfini’s artistic programme, it is intended to be a critical platform in its own right, operating as a discursive space for commissioned texts, artists’ contributions, interviews and other experimental forms. Each issue guest-designed by a different practitioner.

Alongside the latest edition, previous issues, #1 Art, Consumerism and
the Experience Economy& #2 Possible, Probable and Preferable Futures,
are also available from Arnolfini bookshop priced £5.95.

Deadline: September 30, 2010

Via the music research residency program, the Department for the Coordination of Scientific and Musical Research seeks to reinforce the interaction between the scientific and musical community by appealing to the computer music community at large. This program offers scholarships to artists and young professionals wishing to take advantage of a period of residency at IRCAM in order to pursue their music research projects in a stimulating collaborative environment.
Each year – via online submission – a limited number of candidates is selected by a panel of international experts based on the following criteria: project content; scientific and artistic motivation; quality and innovative character of the project; mastery of the technologies needed for the project; demonstrated ability to manage a collaborative research project.

Each selected candidate will benefit from a residency at IRCAM for a specific period, associated with one or more of the institute’s project teams. The candidate will receive a scholarship of 1200 euros. IRCAM does not cover travel and lodging expenses.
During the research residency, candidates will work in the context of the Research and Development department in order to pursue their work. They will collaborate with members of one or more teams thus enabling them to deepen the musical and technological issues explored through experimentation as well as participate in the intellectual life of the institute.

At the end of their stay, the selected candidates will be asked to document and share the results of their work via written publications and public presentations given to the IRCAM community as well as the international computer music community at large.

SUBMIT TO UNSOUND FESTIVAL 2011
Deadline: August 15, 2010

BASIC INFORMATION
((audience)) has been invited to participate in Unsound, a festival of experimental music and sound art. Founded in 2003, Unsound is an annual event held in Krakow, Poland; in April 2011, the festival organizers will present the second annual Unsound festival in New York City at venues throughout the five boroughs.

Conceived in 2006, ((audience)) is an unprecedented project that explores the cinema as a 21st century concert hall. It is dedicated to the advancement of aural arts by providing wide distribution and new contexts for works by emerging and established sound artists and composers. The centerpiece of ((audience)) is a biennial program of 5.1 surround sound works by international artists intended for presentation in movie theaters as “cinema in the dark.” This program travels to partnering organizations from Delhi, India to New York City — accompanied by curatorial lectures, performances, exhibitions and screenings on a city-by-city basis.

CALL FOR WORKS
((audience)) is issuing a special call for 5.1 surround sound works for the 2011 Unsound festival. Selected works will be presented in a completely dark cinema environment without visual accompaniment at the Walter Reade Theater / Film Society of Lincoln Center. Selected artists will receive a modest fee. (Fees to be determined in September.)

All works must relate to this year’s festival theme: “Horror – the Pleasure of Fear and Unease” (for example, one could submit a soundtrack to an imagined horror film; a radio play; a work dealing abstractly with the concept of horror, etc.) New works or newly contextualized works will be accepted. Artists currently located in Eastern Europe are encouraged to apply, and will receive special attention. We are especially interested in narrative or musical works that play with the traditional idea of cinematic surround sound, and/or with the concept of horror, and in works that emphasize temporal, narrative or spatial experimentation.

PLEASE download the submission instructions for information on how to submit, by visiting http://au.dience.org/?/submit/submit/

Dear Friends,

I’d like to invite you to participate in a special project of radio aporee and the World Listening Project for the first World Listening Day, on Sunday, July 18, 2010.

Radio aporee is an open project about the creation and exploration of public space. Its creator, Udo Noll asks you for help in creating an “audio snapshot of the world” as heard and recorded on World Listening Day. Aporee maps uses the Google maps interface to allow anyone to easily find their location on the map, then upload their audio via the web or mobile phone.

We’re inviting you to send an audio recording from your actual location, or other places of your interest on this day to the maps: http://aporee.org/maps/.

With your contributions collected on World Listening Day, Udo will then create a dedicated project page on the aporee map. As Udo says, “And besides having a nice documentation, I’m really intrigued by the idea of listening to the sounds of a particular day, around the world….” I’m very curious about what will happen, too.

Specifications for uploading

WEBSITE: http://aporee.org/maps/

FORMAT: mp3, 128-320 kbit, 44.1 or 48 kHz (for best audio quality, we recommend bitrates of 224, 256 or 320 kbps)

FILE SIZE: max. 25 MB

PLEASE NOTE: Contributors should type a tag “WLD” or “world listening day” in the keywords field, so that it can be found by searches.

Please be patient while uploading, depending on your connection this may take a while.

Below are basic instructions on how to send sounds (upload) to the radio aporee soundmap at http://aporee.org/maps/

You don’t need a login in order to participate, just a valid email address.

Find the location of your audio on the map and click on it

A small pops open that says “new place, add recording” with three choices: upload sound, fetch sound from URL, and phone call.

Select whichever method you’re using to upload, navigate to the file if it’s on your computer, fill in the form fields for info and email address, then click “ok”

Once your audio file has uploaded to the aporee server, check your email for a message from radio aporee

In the message you are provided with a link to confirm and edit the info about your audio submission, please remember to TAG YOUR SUBMISSION: “world listening day” and/or “WLD”

Once that’s done your sound will appear on http://aporee.org/maps/.

Questions? Contact: radio@aporee.org or visit the Help & How-to on radio aporee page.

–

The purposes of World Listening Day are:

To celebrate the practice of listening as it relates to the world around environmental awareness, acoustic ecology, and us

To raise awareness about issues related to the World Soundscape Project, World Listening Project, World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, including individual and group efforts to creatively explore phonography

To design and implement educational initiatives which explore these concepts and practices

—

You’ll find the press release and further information on world Listening Day at http://www.worldlisteningproject.org/?p=667

In-depth Theoretical and practical audiovisual live performance seminary using FLOSS.
Pure Data audiovisual real-time processing, tricks and tips to create your own performance tool.

Description

The seminary consists of four parts. During the introduction the participants acquire a basic theoretical knowledge about Live Media. The introduction is extended through a review of selected audiovisual
works in order to explore and analyse the potential of the audiovisual research.

Therefore participants are introduced to the concept of FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software), they familiarize with few FLOSS software as they understand its practical and theoretical keystones.

In the second part participants learn the meaning of real-time audio-video data processing reviewing the most common production tools. Eventually they deal with the process of an audiovisual performance pre-production using FLOSS: from brainstorming and concept design, through planning of the audiovisual
format, to the collection of support materials such as texts, tutorials, and the drawing of sketches representing the logic structure of data processing.

The third part focus on Pure Data graphical programming environment.
Participants learn to communicate with Pd and how to surf through the audio and visual processing libraries. They build basic processing structures and discover tricks and tips to create their own
performance tool.

For the last part the work group is split in smaller groups. Through practical individual exercises participants acquire the technical know-how about the creation/collection of moving images and sonic
events within the Pure Data graphical programming environment, thus they develop an original software, following the standard realisation steps: beta-testing; analysis of errors and its correction; and final testing during a collective jam performance.

Aim

The seminary seeks to give the participants who don’t have previous experience in programming and Live Media practice the needed theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to feel comfortable
within the FLOSS creation environment. The classes’ aim is to make the participants able to understand and assimilate the diverse passages of the creation process of software ad-hoc in order to be independent during the planning and development of a FLOSS project (musical, audiovisual, multi-media or theatre pieces) using the audiovisual language.

Who’s it for

Musicians, producers, live visualists, film-makers, programmers, sound designers or passionates of digital arts or electronic music and experimentation who want to enhance and extend their skills and tools will find this seminary inspirational and fundamental for the further development of their works and creative ideas, free from the limitations of user-friendly and proprietary software.

No previous programming experience is needed.

What to bring

Participants are invited to bring their laptops and encouraged to bring musical instruments, cameras, photo cameras, webcam, microphones, sensors, MIDI devices and fresh, unusual ideas!

Arduino gets flexible, yes, indeed. Just read this news through Dorbot ALBA mailing list, so I thought to share the few info I found through this article on MAKE magazine.
What you see in the picture is an experimentation of an Arduino-compatible board on flexible printed circuit (FPC) material, developed in this same moment by the folks at Seeed Studio.

The material insulating the circuit is very similar to the traditional one, except for his flexibility. This means you would be able to bend and change the shape of your Arduino board.
You can view a complete list of feature at Seeed Studio website.
This is not a final product, folks are working on the production of few prototypes to give out to some lucky, want-absolutely-to-try-that guys who will propose interesting usage of the new hardware… well, it doesn’t look so hard anymore.

:: Open Source Hardware User Group meeting #3 ::
:: Thursday 1st July 2010, London SW1 ::

For the third Open Source Hardware User Group meeting we’ll be asking the question “what factors contribute to the success of an open source hardware project?”, and using Arduino and derivatives LilyPad Arduino and the concurrency.cc board as the basis for the discussion.

There will be presentations on:

- Current Cost Bridge – an Arduino based, hackable consumer device

The Current Cost Bridge was developed using the open-source Arduino platform. The reason for using Arduino, was to speed up the development process of the bridge, allowing for fast prototyping and producing a hackable device.

http://www.currentcost.com/product-bridge.html

- Concurrency.cc – parallel programming for makers and artists

The concurrency.cc project describes itself as “a group of educators and researchers exploring the development of tools that make parallel programming more accessible to more people. Our hope is that concurrency.cc will serve the community of developers surrounding parallel and concurrent languages on the Arduino and other low-cost embedded platforms.”

http://concurrency.cc/

- LilyPad – an Arduino based platform for wearables and e-textiles

The LilyPad Arduino is a microcontroller, plus a set of sewable electronic components designed so they can be put together to create interactive wearables or textiles based artworks. There is quite a range of components such as LEDS, sensors, buzzer, accelerometer and more that can be connected with conductive thread. The board is based on the ATmega168V/328Vand was designed and developed by Leah Buechley and SparkFun Electronics.

Just after my audiovisual concert at Mapping Festival I flight to Copenhagen for Re-New Digital Arts Festival, a mostly sound art-focused four days annual event.
The overall quality of the selected works was impressive and the organization was unexceptionable.
Once unpacked my stuff at the hotel I had a lovely walk through Copenhagen and shortly reached Huset i Magstraede, the main location of the event which is nicely located in the old center of the Danish city.

Bad Religion Still Alive! | Copenhagen | 2010

I didn’t even had the time to sit down and connect my laptop I immediately noticed a guy working with an Arduino box, that’s how I got to know brasilian digital artist Henrique Roscoe aka HOL and his interactive creature “Shy”. Henrique is a lovely person and talented guy, he also organizes the FAD festival in Belo Horizonte, Brasil.

One hour later I started setting up the participative concert and interactive sound installation “High Spheres”. Thanks to the kind support of sound technician and the organizers everything went smoothly and in a couple of hours the setup was ready. My work was programmed for the opening of the festival, I spent thus last hour modifying the Pure Data patch to adapt it to the open air environment in front of Huset.

Great timing, great weather, great location. I was also quite happy to use for the first time in public my brand new multi-channel sound card. A powerful Focusrite Saffire Pro40, 20 I/O, 8 Pre-amplified I/O and a lot of quality components. Worked like a charm.
Around 19.00 audience started to gather in the main garden and the participative concert could start.
Audience was really excited about the work and I gladly noticed how children and elderly people were equally interested and attracted by the improvised sound interaction provided by my self-designed system. A local TV operator was there too shooting the concert.

Personally the most interesting aspect of this work is to see how different people relate to sound. You know, children were posing and screaming without caring too much about what kind of sounds they could produce, some of the participants were really curious and started looking around for different objects to use, some of them were really shy and were almost hiding while producing tiny silent sounds, some people was totally seduced by the collective interaction, some others were just trying to get loud. This is probably what the work is about, a collective improvisation, a almost unaware group ritual, during which every single individuals is connected to each other in reaction chain.

I should surely mention few other works.
Ryo Ikeshiro presented “Pulse Cubes” an interactive installation based on tiny greatly-designed black cubes tracking. The user can set the cubes in patterns over a white table as their position generates granular and organic sounds in real-time.

Ryo Ikeshiro | Pulse Cubes | Re-New Festival 2010

The main Huset hall was animated by “He” a music-drawing installation by New York based artists Hsin Yi Chien and Laewoo Kang. A beautifully crafted drawing machine was setup with a luminance tracking system – developed in Processing – which translated calligraphy into music.

Hsin Yi Chien Laewoo Kang | He | Re-New Festival 2010

This conference-colloquium at the Humanistic Faculty, Aarhus University, will relate to the widespread use of the concepts event and/or affect in contemporary research of media, art, philosophy, politics and culture. It is the aim to qualify, explore and investigate the scope of the terms event and affect in different analytical fields. We assume that the renewed focus on event and affect is partly due to the impact of new (electronic and digital) media and the new forms of immediacy created by real-time control and transmission.
The conference will therefore investigate two key issues: 1) How can we describe event and affect on philosophical, artistic, political and cultural levels? 2) Has a new paradigm of the signal – related to the bypassing of representation in real-time transmissions – superseded the sign? What characterizes the signal?

By combining these questions the conference wants to initiate a broader discussion on a paradigmatic transformation from sign to signal in relation to the concepts of event and affect and their use and scope in art, politics and culture.

[The text above is an extract of the Conference's call. The arrangement team consists of: Bodil Marie Stavning Thomsen, Britta Timm Knudsen, Dorthe Refslund Christensen, Carsten Stage, Camilla Møhring Reestorff, Mathias Bonde Korsgaard and Jonas Fritsch].

My paper is about networked events as political and social practices of criticism in grassroots communities. Title is: The Network Events. Networked art as a challenge for sociopolitical transformation. I will address some artistic and activist projects as an example of fertile zones of rewriting and experimentation of cultural and political codes. In particular, I will describe the Italian case of Anna Adamolo (2008-2009).
