“Want to turn your mobile device into a musical instrument? Or equip your game with interactive audio, rather than canned samples? You can do it with Pure Data (Pd), an open source visual programming environment that lets you manipulate digital audio in real time. This concise book shows you how to use Pd—with help from the libpd library—as an easily embeddable and widely portable sound engine.”

Workshop at Designing Interactive Systems (DIS) conference 2012:
Designing Musical Interactions for Mobile Systems
Tuesday 12 June 2012, Culture Lab Newcastle

Mobile music technology is a vast growth area, and has emerged as a field in which many of the specific design challenges and affordances of mobile technologies can be explored. The mobile is not just a smaller computer, and requires different tactics and strategies for user interaction. This workshop will discuss the specific interaction design challenges for building engaging and creative musical activities on mobile devices. Participants will share knowledge on interface design models that push the limits of what a mobile can offer for creating rich musical interactions. The workshop will culminate in an evening event, a public concert of mobile music.

SUBMISSION
Please download the position paper template from the workshop website,

http://sopi.media.taik.fi/mobilemusic

This event looks very good, free, great music and performances in Berlin. Wish I could attend.

Performances by
Echo Ho (DE/CN), Mario de Vega (MX), Alex Nowitz (DE), Ignaz Schick (DE)

Thursday, 26.01.2012
8pm – Performances from 9pm
Free Entry (or donate what you like)

Following the first event event of the BodyControlled series, BodyControlled #2 focuses on the idea of incompatible matter. While BC #1 was organized around the concept of “other spaces”, using the specific architecture at LEAP and provoking it in order to synthesize new environments, BC #2 combines space and sound.

Through exploring the physical reality of sound-instruments and objects, complex acoustic spaces emerge. Sound of any kind – vocals, instruments, vibrations – become a material themselves, a hybrid. Creating Matter-Incompatible, the exhibition focuses on searching for the hidden materiality of acoustics, where distinguishing between live-produced sound and mechanically generated playback becomes a challenging self-observation.

All performances will be available from 20.00 CET via live stream on

Just received this interesting and specific looking call.

SCANZ 2013: THIRD NATURE
Call for projects

The concept of a third space – a zone of hybridity – traverses the cultural landscape from the writing of Homi Bhabba in the mid 1990s, to Sony advertising (see hypertext.rmit.edu.au/dac/papers/meguire.pdf). Hybridity is now embedded in creative and
cultural production and consumption.

A space of hybridity can assimilate potentially any set of concepts. SCANZ2013 3rdNature seeks to develop a fresh space, carrying memes from previous SCANZ events (which have all had an emphasis on environment) and other Intercreate projects that have involved
scientists, indigenous peoples and artists working together. We are aiming to build new knowledge and establish legacies around this work, unencumbered by old perspectives and distant categories.

We ignore the environmental crisis at our own peril. Integrating the indigenous perspective, creative environmental and scientific views on the environment is essential for continued human habitation of the planet. From these trajectories it is possible to conceive of a fresh hybrid space, composed of overlapping elements.

We ask tangata whenua, artists, technologists, teachers, environmentalists, scientists, philosophers, educationalists,
indigenous peoples, technologists and lecturers to contact us with ideas for talks, discussions, presentations, residency projects,
exhibition ideas for gallery space and a botanic garden. And to join us on the weekend of January 1st- 3rd, 2013 at a hui to share
knowledge and build resources.

Important Dates:
Early expression of interest: February 12,
2012
Residency proposed dates: Saturday 19 January to Monday 4
February,2013
Symposium proposed dates: February 1-3, 2013

Call
This is a call for project concepts for the fourth SCANZ residency to be held in New Plymouth, New Zealand early in 2013. Planned are: a two week residency and Open Lab beginning with a one night stay over at historic Owae marae, an exhibition at Puke Ariki museum, four projects in a local botanic garden, a Pecha Kucha night and a three day symposium with a presentation evening on the middle night.

3rd NAURE THEMES
This project involves creativity and innovation at the intersection of three critical interfaces:
*Acknowledging the environmental crisis
*Engaging with Maori and indigenous peoples
*Engaging the Sciences and Hybrid Arts

These three intersecting dialogues together provide space for a 3rd Nature, a fresh space for engaging with new knowledge and approaches vital to a sustainable civilisation.

Possible Activities
Exhibition projects – in Puke Ariki Museum
Residency projects at the Western Institute of Technology, Tarinaki (WITT) campus
Projects in Pukekura Park Botanic Garden
Workshops at WITT campus or local environs including the beach and parks
Symposium papers and presentations
Pecha Kucha Night
Open Lab at WITT campus

Find here further info about the application process.

Here’s a forwarded message by Derek Holzer.

“After a 10 month hiatus, the Soundtransit project is back thanks to the generous hosting support of Turbulence.org.

SoundTransit is a collaborative, online community dedicated to field recording and phonography. Phonography is the art of recording sounds from the environment around us, with an emphasis on the unintentional sounds which often go unnoticed in our daily lives. An international community of phonographers collect and share their recordings, with interests ranging from recordings of natural or urban environments to improvised situations or soundwalks to the resonance of solid objects or the Earth’s atmosphere

In the BOOK section of this site, you can plan a sonic journey through various locations recorded around the world. In the SEARCH section, you can search the database for specific sounds by member artists from many different places. If you are a member of SoundTransit, you can also CONTRIBUTE your recordings for others to enjoy. The Creative Commons Attribution license encourages the sharing and reuse of all sounds on this website.

During 2010, our previous host in the Netherlands quadrupled the rent for our server, forcing us to move or consider closing. Turbulence.org graciously offered their support, and during 2011 we’ve been working together with them, getting everything up and running again.

Please visit us at

to hear our collection of over 2000 recordings from 471 artists around the world, experience our unique way of traveling via sound and find out how you can help the SoundTransit project.

Huge thanks go out to Helen Thorington, Jo-Anne Green and Jesse Gilbert of Turbulence for their kindness and patience!”

Pillow Talk – a series of projection for performance documentaries, organized by Japanese media artist Yamaguchi Noriko.
“Performances cannot be shared by people of all the time, however much appreciation they received. Since they are consumed immediately and become “something that happened” very soon, their records should be all the more important. However, documentary movies of performing arts have not had frequent chances to be projected.
This exhibition is to create that opportunity for ourselves. Lying on the floor of a comfortable space with high ceiling, why donʼ t you enjoy these unexplored movies with us?”

Pillow Talk #3 took place last Saturday at the KCUA, Kyoto City University of Arts, Japan.
The event included screenings of 3 performances hosted at this year WRO Biennale; namely, my audiovisual work I C::ntr::l Nature, along with works by Istvan Kantor, Megan May Daalder. The programme of Pillow Talk also included works by Ichihara Hiroko, Sako Kojima and Tomohiko Kyogoku.

Job posted by Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics/ University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (23/11/2011)
PhD student in Sonification Research (Audio Engineering/ Climate Science)

Applications are invited for a postgraduate student to join the Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM, http://iem.kug.ac.at) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz for the FWF funded project SysSon – A systematic procedure to develop sonifications.

The goal of SysSon is the systematic development of sonifications – from finding sound metaphors and creating a ‘sound library’ to aesthetic/scientific evaluation and finally the sonification tool ‘ClAudio-Climate Audio’.
The Pixelache Software of the Year 2012 title is this time given to din – din is noise.

din is a Free software musical instrument exclusively for the GNU/ Linux operating system made by the Indian programmer S. Jagannathan.
din – din is noise presents an innovative way of generating live music from a simple visual interface based on Bezier curves, and is a good example of how creative and DIY technologies can foster new approaches and solutions that escapes the leading rules of the software industry.

It forgets history,
To not repeat it.
It doesnt hide analog music hardware,
In digital music software.

You had pulse, sine, triangle and sawtooth,
And went forth and made electronic music.

Now there is just the Bezier curve.

Pixelache Software of the Year is an initiative by Pixelache Network, started in 2008. The chosen software for the first year was Animata, a live animation software by Kitchen Budapest. In 2010 it was divided between the live CD distributions pure:dyne by GOTO10 and APODIO by APO33.

APO33 a not-for-profit association/artists collective founded in 1997 in Nantes, France. APO33 research practices cross philosophy, poetry, visual, architecture, sonic arts and anything else that may arrive through collaborative working. APO33 projects often use networked and physical spaces, develop tools (hardware/software) for its creative projects and the FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) community of artists and programmers.

RESIDENCY: APO33 invites artists annually to develop new work in situ. The resident will have the opportunity to work towards an exhibition, presentation, experimentation reflecting on these working methods and forms of collaboration, depending on the proposal. The residency usually entails two levels of development: a first preparation stage (approximately 1 month) installation, performance … or to realise a performance project or architectural construction and a second stage where space is open to the public (visit, participate and feedback). APO33 will provide technical assistance to artists and expert assistance to those using digital media open to exploring FLOSS software and programming tools. MEDIA ART NEEDS GLOBAL NETWORKED ORGANISATION & SUPPORT –
International Declaration

State of Affairs

“Digital technology has fundamentally changed the way art is made. Over the last forty years, Media Art has become a significant part of our networked information society. Although there are well-attended international festivals, collaborative research projects, exhibitions and database documentation resources, Media Art research is still marginal in universities, museums and archives. It remains largely under-resourced in our core cultural institutions.

As a result of rapid changes in technology, many major works made even 10 years ago can no longer be shown or are disappearing without a trace. If this situation is not addressed, we face losing an art form that is a central part of our post-industrial digital culture. To date, systematic global preservation and documentation campaigns do not exist. Many important online documentation and research projects are also disappearing from the web. As they falter, we risk losing their valuable material forever. Contemporary scientific research relies on access to shared data. The same is true of the Arts and Humanities, which lack a concerted international policy for sustainability and support of the digital heritage, such as exists partly in the natural sciences…”

I’m glad to see this publication out there. From the press release:
“The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University and the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry have co-published “New Art/Science Affinities,” a 190-page book on contemporary artists that was written and designed in one week by four authors (Andrea Grover, Régine Debatty, Claire Evans and Pablo Garcia) and two designers (Luke Bulman and Jessica Young of Thumb).

“New Art/Science Affinities,” which focuses on artists working at the intersection of art, science and technology, was produced by a collaborative authoring process known as a “book sprint.” Derived from “code sprinting,” a method in which software developers gather in a single room to work intensely on an open source project for a certain period of time, the term book sprint describes the quick, collective writing of a topical book.

The book includes meditations, interviews, diagrams, letters and manifestos on maker culture, hacking, artist research, distributed creativity, and technological and speculative design. Chapters include Program Art or Be Programmed, Subvert! Citizen Science, Artists in White Coats and Latex Gloves, The Maker Moment and The Overview Effect.”

Book can be purchased or downloaded as a free PDF.

Along with ideas and critical analysis, the book includes 60 international artists among which Agnes Meyer-Brandis, Atelier Van Lieshout, Brandon Ballengée, Free Art and Technology (F.A.T.), Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, The Institute for Figuring, Aaron Koblin, Machine Project, Openframeworks, C.E.B. Reas, Philip Ross, Tomás Saraceno, SymbioticA, Jer Thorp, Marius Watz and myself (with the work Golden Shield Music).

Thanks to the “sprint” contributors: Régine Debatty, Claire L. Garcia, Thumb.

The work has been published by The Studio for Creative Enquiry and The Miller Gallery is Carnegie Mellon University’s contemporary art gallery.

Folks at the Open Hardware Summit just released this sweet call for submission to award one Open Hardware Scholarship.
They say “Where does the money come from? We had $2,000 USD left over from our funds last year and we thought the best way to use it is to give it back to the community.”
Lovely… just get your chance! I’ll probably apply too right now… even only to show some love to the initiative!

Here are the details.

“Do you have the next big Open Hardware idea, but just don’t have the funds for it?

The Open Hardware Summit (OHS) is announcing its first Open Hardware scholarship this year! The purpose of the OHS scholarship is to support emerging artists/inventors and developers by providing funding for works that are released as Open Source Hardware. Granting these funds is an opportunity to draw attention to the Open Source Hardware movement, to give back to the DIY community, and to give you the chance to join a growing roster of gamechangers in Open Source Hardware history. If you have a project that is in the spirit of the OHS and supports the OHSW definition, we welcome your submissions.

PRIZE
Upwards of $2000 will be awarded. The scholarship is made available by the generous individuals and sponsors who have made the Open Hardware Summit possible.

PUBLIC VOTE
The winner will be chosen by the public. All projects will be viewable online and votes will be collected during the week of the summit. People will be able to vote on their favorite project remotely or onsite. A check will be presented to the winning artist/group at the conclusion of OHS on September 15th at the New York Hall of Science
