This event looks very good, free, great music and performances in Berlin. Wish I could attend.

Performances by
Echo Ho (DE/CN), Mario de Vega (MX), Alex Nowitz (DE), Ignaz Schick (DE)

Thursday, 26.01.2012
8pm – Performances from 9pm
Free Entry (or donate what you like)

Following the first event event of the BodyControlled series, BodyControlled #2 focuses on the idea of incompatible matter. While BC #1 was organized around the concept of “other spaces”, using the specific architecture at LEAP and provoking it in order to synthesize new environments, BC #2 combines space and sound.

Through exploring the physical reality of sound-instruments and objects, complex acoustic spaces emerge. Sound of any kind – vocals, instruments, vibrations – become a material themselves, a hybrid. Creating Matter-Incompatible, the exhibition focuses on searching for the hidden materiality of acoustics, where distinguishing between live-produced sound and mechanically generated playback becomes a challenging self-observation.

All performances will be available from 20.00 CET via live stream on

Just received this interesting and specific looking call.

SCANZ 2013: THIRD NATURE
Call for projects

The concept of a third space – a zone of hybridity – traverses the cultural landscape from the writing of Homi Bhabba in the mid 1990s, to Sony advertising (see hypertext.rmit.edu.au/dac/papers/meguire.pdf). Hybridity is now embedded in creative and
cultural production and consumption.

A space of hybridity can assimilate potentially any set of concepts. SCANZ2013 3rdNature seeks to develop a fresh space, carrying memes from previous SCANZ events (which have all had an emphasis on environment) and other Intercreate projects that have involved
scientists, indigenous peoples and artists working together. We are aiming to build new knowledge and establish legacies around this work, unencumbered by old perspectives and distant categories.

We ignore the environmental crisis at our own peril. Integrating the indigenous perspective, creative environmental and scientific views on the environment is essential for continued human habitation of the planet. From these trajectories it is possible to conceive of a fresh hybrid space, composed of overlapping elements.

We ask tangata whenua, artists, technologists, teachers, environmentalists, scientists, philosophers, educationalists,
indigenous peoples, technologists and lecturers to contact us with ideas for talks, discussions, presentations, residency projects,
exhibition ideas for gallery space and a botanic garden. And to join us on the weekend of January 1st- 3rd, 2013 at a hui to share
knowledge and build resources.

Important Dates:
Early expression of interest: February 12,
2012
Residency proposed dates: Saturday 19 January to Monday 4
February,2013
Symposium proposed dates: February 1-3, 2013

Call
This is a call for project concepts for the fourth SCANZ residency to be held in New Plymouth, New Zealand early in 2013. Planned are: a two week residency and Open Lab beginning with a one night stay over at historic Owae marae, an exhibition at Puke Ariki museum, four projects in a local botanic garden, a Pecha Kucha night and a three day symposium with a presentation evening on the middle night.

3rd NAURE THEMES
This project involves creativity and innovation at the intersection of three critical interfaces:
*Acknowledging the environmental crisis
*Engaging with Maori and indigenous peoples
*Engaging the Sciences and Hybrid Arts

These three intersecting dialogues together provide space for a 3rd Nature, a fresh space for engaging with new knowledge and approaches vital to a sustainable civilisation.

Possible Activities
Exhibition projects – in Puke Ariki Museum
Residency projects at the Western Institute of Technology, Tarinaki (WITT) campus
Projects in Pukekura Park Botanic Garden
Workshops at WITT campus or local environs including the beach and parks
Symposium papers and presentations
Pecha Kucha Night
Open Lab at WITT campus

Find here further info about the application process.

APO33 a not-for-profit association/artists collective founded in 1997 in Nantes, France. APO33 research practices cross philosophy, poetry, visual, architecture, sonic arts and anything else that may arrive through collaborative working. APO33 projects often use networked and physical spaces, develop tools (hardware/software) for its creative projects and the FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) community of artists and programmers.

RESIDENCY: APO33 invites artists annually to develop new work in situ. The resident will have the opportunity to work towards an exhibition, presentation, experimentation reflecting on these working methods and forms of collaboration, depending on the proposal. The residency usually entails two levels of development: a first preparation stage (approximately 1 month) installation, performance … or to realise a performance project or architectural construction and a second stage where space is open to the public (visit, participate and feedback). APO33 will provide technical assistance to artists and expert assistance to those using digital media open to exploring FLOSS software and programming tools. In addition artists are invited to give a public talk around their practice and project at APO33. We will give preference to those applicants with a strong desire to exchange and collaborate with the APO33 project as a whole.

I’ve been working on a very special track for this release produced by the almighty experimental label Sinewaves.
Sinewaves have been spreading for 10 years now the most interesting music by new and old italian experimental generation of musicians, improvisers and sound designers. And all the music has always been released for free!

This album is something quite special. Grab it until 1st May or order one of the 100 limited CD-R copies.

Sixteen tracks dedicated to the 10th Sinewaves’ anniversary; sixteen artists worked to a track which was modified and remixed by another artist. Each track is the remix of the previous one.
This process allowed every musician to add or delete sounds, noises and effects, “misreading” or “misinterpreting” the previous track, just like the children’s game “broken telephone”.

THIS ALBUM WILL BE AVAILABLE IN A 100 COPIES CD-R LIMITED EDITION.

“PdDroidParty is, I think, the easiest way to get your patches running on your Android devices. It emulates Pd native user interface elements (only toggle and slider implemented so far) so all you need to do is name your patch droidparty_main.pd and copy it to your SD card.

Download and install the apk from here, and then try out the drum machine example by unzipping it to your SD card:

This is beta software hot off the compiler, but I think it’s just ready enough for use. As always, patches welcome!

PERFORMANCE
Francisco López: Hyper-Rainforest
Friday-Saturday, April 28-30, 2011, 8 PM
Concert Hall
$15/10/5

World premiere of an 80 channel immersive concert based on a decade of natural sounds recorded in the world’s rain forests.

Rainforests are inhabited by an incredibly rich variety of sounds—much like a piece of electronic music: the astonishing variety of sounds comes from sources that are concrete yet overwhelmingly invisible.

Hyper-Rainforest is a monumental sound piece, both in duration and in how the sounds are projected to the Concert Hall. All music in this performance stems from field recordings—but it does not simulate the natural reality of the original locations. Instead, the work creates a sonic hyper-reality, a virtual world of sound and music that goes beyond a trip to a rainforest. The original materials are observed, analyzed, and composed to create a piece that surrounds the audience, moving deep into the sounds themselves and toward new sounds still rooted in their origins.

This world premiere commission was developed in residence at EMPAC.

Tickets are required and are available through the EMPAC box office for $15 general admission; $10 for students, seniors, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute faculty and staff; or $5 for Rensselaer students.

Evelyn’s Café will open at 7 PM. Parking for this event is available in the Rensselaer parking lot on College Avenue.

Francisco López is an internationally recognized sound art and experimental music artist. He has 30 years of experience in sound creation and environmental recordings, and has been involved in hundreds of sound installations, field recordings, and concerts in over 60 countries. His extensive catalogue of sound pieces (with collaborations with more than 130 international artists) has been published worldwide by more than 200 recording companies. He has received three honorary mentions at the Ars Electronica Festival (Austria) and is the recipient of the Qwartz Award 2010 (France) for best sound anthology.

“Pd as your embedded audio engine” will teach all about embedding libpd as the sound engine for your app, whether its iPhone, Android, Java, OpenFrameworks, Processing, etc. This workshop provides a broad spectrum of different ways of connecting Pd to other things. Having hardware isn’t a requirement either. The workshop will cover ways of interfacing with Pd from computer to computer. Bring your laptop and devices that you want to install libpd on (Android, iPhone, etc.)

HTML and/or programming knowledge will certainly help. The aim of this workshop is to give a broad spectrum of different ways to interface to Pd. So it will be dipping very slightly into Python, C, Java, Javascript, but this is usually “glue code” and all of the code will be fully provided. You do not need to be proficient in these languages at all, the workshop will also cover methods that also just use Pd with no code at all.

Here is an outline of topics:

* Introduction
* History of Pd as an engine
* Ways to interface with a Pd process
* Midi & OSC
* FUDI
* stdout
* Python + sockets
* pdsend/pdreceive
* Parsing patches in three languages
* libpd on Android and iOS
* PdWebKitDroid
* RjDj and ScenePlayer
* WebPd

What
The workshop offers an hands-on experience and both theoretical and practical training in gestural control of music and bodily musical performance, deploying the brand-new biosensing technology Xth Sense.

Developed by the workshop teacher Marco Donnarumma within a research project at The University of Edinburgh, Xth Sense is a framework for the application of muscle sounds to the biophysical generation and control of music.
It consists of a low cost, DIY biosensing wearable device and an Open Source based software for capture, analysis and audio processing of biological sounds of the body (Pure Data-based).
Muscle sounds are captured in real time and used both as sonic source material and control values for sound effects, enabling the performer to control music simply with his body and kinetic energy.
Forget your mice, MIDI controllers, you will not even need to look at your laptop anymore.

The Xth Sense biosensor was designed to be easily implemented by anyone, no previous experience in electronics is required.
The applications of the Xth Sense technology are manifold: from complex gestural control of samples and audio synthesis, through biophysical generation of music and sounds, to kinetic control of real time digital processing of traditional musical instruments, and more.

Music for Flesh II – solo piece for Xth Sense biosensing wearable device from Marco Donnarumma aka TheSAD on Vimeo.

How
Firstly, participants will be introduced to the Xth Sense Technology by its author and led through the assembling of their own biosensing wearable hardware using the materials provided.
Next, they will become proficient with the Xth Sense software framework: all the features of the framework will be unleashed through practical exercises.
Theoretical background on the state of art of gestural control of music and new musical instruments will be developed by means of an audiovisual review and participatory critical analysis of relevant projects selected by the instructor.
Eventually, participants will combine hardware and software to implement a solo or group performance to be presented during the closing event.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be free to keep the Xth Sense biosensors they built and the related software for their own use.

Perspective participants
The workshop is open to anyone passionate about sound and music. Musical background and education does not matter as long as you are ready to challenge your usual perspective on musical performance.
Composers, producers, sound designers, musicians, field recordists are all welcome to join our team for an innovative and highly creative experience.

No previous experience in electronics or programming is required, however participants should be familiar with digital music creation. Participation is limited to 10 candidates.

Register by sending an email to info@nkprojekt.de

FULL PROGRAM available at http://www.nkprojekt.de/xth-sense…

Requirements and further info
Participants need to provide their own headphones, external soundcards and laptops with Pd-extended already installed.
Free download is available at http://puredata.info/community/projects/software/pd-extended

Musicians interested in augmenting their favourite musical instrument by means of body gestures are encouraged to bring their instrument along.

http://face-to-facebook.net

Face to Facebook is a project by Paolo Cirio and Alessandro Ludovico, who wrote special software to steal 1 million public profiles from Facebook, filtering them through face-recognition software and posting the resulting 250,000 profiles (categorized by facial expression) on a dating website called Lovely-Faces.com.
The project was launched at Transmediale, the annual festival for art and digital culture in Berlin, on February 2nd, in the form of installation displaying a selection of 1,716 pictures of unaware Facebook users, an explanatory video and a diagram detailing the whole process. The Lovely-Faces.com website went online on the same day.

Regenwald 2011: a workshop/installation/performance in the spirit of David Tudor
for Club Transmediale Berlin
with Derek Holzer (USA/DE) & Mads Bech Paluszewski (DK)

Direct link: http://macumbista.net/?p=2018

*Overview*

Regenwald 2011 is a contemporary re-interpretation of David Tudor’s series of compositions from the 1970′s entitled “Rainforest”. It uses various types of sonic transducers to play live sounds through various resonant objects in the performance space, as well as through architectural features of the space itself. Additionally, an 8×8 matrix mixer allows the sound from any of the objects to be sent to any of the performers, making the whole piece an experiment in generative chaos.

Regenwald 2011 will be developed in a workshop format with up to 8 participants over a period of several days. The resulting work should shift between relatively static installation-like moments and performative sections where the artists seek new relationships with the objects and each other. The audience is free to move around the performance space, engage in conversations and explore the resonant objects, thus adding new life to the rainforest.

A opening night presentation will introduce the concept of Regenwald 2011 and the context of “Schematic as Score” as seen in the works of both David Tudor and John Cage.

*Documentation*

A rough schematic of a previous transducer system (Regenskog 2010) can be seen here:
http://macumbista.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/regnskog_notext.png

http://macumbista.net/?p=1840

*Dates*

28 January – 01 February, 12-19:00 daily: Regenwald 2011 workshop in West Germany, Kottbusser Tor, Berlin
01 February 21:00: opening Regenwald 2011 presentation/performance, West Germany, Kottbusser Tor, Berlin
02 February – 05 February 18-22:00 daily: Regenwald 2011 installation, West Germany, Kottbusser Tor, Berlin

*Participate*

The Regenwald 2011 workshop is open for 8 participants who will be selected and notified on or before 16 January 2011. There is no fee to participate. Applying participants should be:

–Comfortable working in a collaborative environment
Multiplayer Text Adventure Game on Facebook

“You are 4.3 billion kilometres away from the nearest human, what would you like to do?”

Naked on Pluto is a Multiplayer Text Adventure Game on Facebook. You wake up on Pluto, in a city under the rule of Elastic Versailles revision 14, a corrupted Artificial Intelligence and former entertainment colony. It used to be the Las Vegas of the Solar System, a true paradise for consumers and corporations alike. Until something snapped… What happened and how to escape?

Versailles is a capital of convenience, a non stop 24hr zone of endless pleasure, provided by Pluto’s huge entertainment corporations. Amuse yourself and your friends for hours on end collecting meaningless tokens, talking to our bland robots, or simply relax and take in the staggering conformity of your new home. Take absolutely no notice of the areas you aren’t allowed to go into, even if it were possible to break out of the zone around the Palace, why would you possibly want to – or indeed why change the core structures of this world when they have been so excellently taylored to fit your every desire?

The game explores the limits and nature of social networks from within, slowly pushing the boundaries of what is tolerated by the companies that own them, carefully documenting this process as we go. Story and play are combined with an investigation on how exposed we are on social networks, and how our data are being used.

Naked on Pluto is developed during a shared residency at NIMk, BALTAN Laboraties and Piksel, between June and November 2010, by Dave Griffiths, Aymeric Mansoux and Marloes de Valk. The project is licensed Copyleft.

The research and development process is documented and can be followed on http://pluto.kuri.mu and http://facebook.com/is.so.convenient

The game can be played on http://naked-on-pluto.net

libpd has reached a 0.1 release, enabling developers to use Pd as a sound engine in their applications. Out of the gate, we have extensive code samples for Android 1.5 and later, plus the basic tools to work on iOS (recent armv7 recommended for now, with other devices soon). In the near future, embedding Pd patches inside tools like Processing/Java, OpenFrameworks/C++, and Python should be just as easy. The library is based on Pd vanilla, so this is not a fork of Pd; you can use patches in it just as you would in any other version.

Developers will find the library, code snippets (for Android; iOS is coming), and even some handy abstractions:
http://gitorious.org/pdlib/pages/Packages
… in addition to patches from Chris detailed in the CDM post above.

libpd available is thanks to the work of Peter Brinkmann, with testing, further development, documentation, and other contributions from the RjDj team (who are now adopting it in their future development work), Hans-Christoph Steiner, Chris McCormick (who has also added the ability to make HTML5 web interfaces), and Peter Kirn, along with members of the NYC Patching Circle at NYC Resistor.

I’d like to share some documentation regarding my latest work The invisible suns project.

“Can the trading market patterns be represented in a perceptually weighted experience?
Invisible Suns is an autonomous system that every day analyzes the historical stock prices of a variable selection of major corporations, compresses in few minutes over 8 years of economic transactions and eventually produces a generative and self-organizing audiovisual datascape.”

In May I’ve been invited to Pikslaverk Festival in Reykjavik, Iceland, to present my work Golden Shield Music, a multi-channel generative sonification of IT censorship.
Pikslaverk is the Icelandic branch of the Pixelache Network which operates worldwide thanks to several organizations such as the almighty Piksel and its community.
Yes, I know, it’s probably very late for a report, but come on… better later than never.
Although I was really looking forward to my Icelandic journey, the arrival in Reykjavik was slightly weird. I was stopped and checked at the border by the local police for about 30′, with no explicit reason. I did not have anything illegal with me, fortunately. However after this warm welcome I suddenly faced an awful and hostile weather which did not help me rescuing the excitement.

Hostile weather | Iceland | 2010

Later on all my worries disappeared: I reached our lovely accommodation and eventually met long time friend Servando Barreiro along with the other international artists hosted for the event.
Once relaxed, chilled and excited again, I joined the group at the Reykjavik Art Museum for the first session of lectures.
The bad weather were still hiding the beauty of the city, but the modern, formal and cozy mood of the museum positively surprised me.

Reykjavik Art Museum | Pikslaverk Festival | Iceland | 2010

While Servando was setting up his performance for the opening of the festival, I got my chance to meet the organizers of the event and have a chat in the shiny library of the museum.
Margrét Elísabet Ólafsdóttir is an exquisite person and an excellent host, she’s also a curator working with digital and critical media. Aki Asgeirsson is a talented experimental composer and organizer for the Raflost festival. Curiously enough, we had already met a week before in Copenhagen as he have performed a concert at the Re-new Festival.

Servando Barreiro | Pikslaverk Festival | Iceland | 2010

Margrét Elisabet Olafsdottir & Aki Asgeirsson | Pikslaverk Festival | Iceland | 2010

Eventually Margrét formally opened the event and lectures started. Pall Thayer presented his Microcodes, “very small code-based artworks. Each one is a fully contained work of art. The conceptual meaning of each piece is revealed through a combination of the title, the code and the results of running them on a computer”. I had already viewed the work on-line, but the talk revealed some specific and interesting aspects of the research along with many practical examples. Make sure you check his website.
Then Servando performed an audiovisual self-destructive concert and the night ended with the hyper-fast and tense meta-talk by Goodiepal. I think I can’t really explain his presentation, probably any explanation won’t even make justice to the performance he made, but just think about 20mins of the fastest and most chaotic talk you can imagine, fill it with some real pragmatical and cynical considerations about modern electronic music as we know it and mix it with the exhibition of self-promoting hand-crafted gadgets such as toy-shaped vinyls, fake (?) theoretical handbooks and other lovely, weird objects.

Pall Thayer | Microcodes | Pikslaverk Festival | Iceland | 2010

The day after we all met again at the Museum Hall for another session of lectures. Presentations were mostly focused on software “art” and a critical approach to the digital media in its widest conception. Martin Howse talked about his research projects amongst which I’d like to mention the brilliant Island2 “a free software application which creates a semi-permanent, isolated island in the computer’s memory”. I presented the Golden Shield Music project and I have to thank the audience and the other artists who outlined few criticism which I didn’t faced before, questioning the “liveness” of the generative system and proposing a theoretically endless accumulation of data instead of a static analysis of pre-recorded figures.
Next was Linda Hilfling who introduced a “TV-program in its literary meaning – a software executing local-tv-transmissions, where the code of the programme critically reflects on the premises of participatory media itself.” (I stole this quote from http://www.observatori.com/pages/ob.php?anim=0&lang=en&tid=3). Finally Rafael Hidalgo closed the session presenting his Personal Weather Sensation, a multimedia project researching the interaction between the weather and human feelings, aiming at the creation of a sonic reactive environment controlled by the variations of weather conditions in specific place around the world.

Marco Donnarumma | Pikslaverk Festival | Iceland | 2010 | Photo by Ser_

Eventually we headed at the Reykjavik Academy of Fine Arts to attend the presentation by Juan Parra and the exhibition of student’s final projects included in the Raflost program.
The walk was amazing: 20/30 mins wandering along the open sea surrounded by most likely the widest sky I’ve ever seen.

The night after PIkslaverk was officially closed with few hours of live performances including myself and I C::ntr::l Nature audiovisual improvisational concert, Juan Parra quadriphonic concert, Martinka Bobrikova and Oscar de Carmen and some other interesting performances.
The following party ended in the morning and I exploited the industrial set of the location to make some improvised strictly geeky and conceptual mapping projections over the whole building structure using the latest mapping module for FLxER, free vjing and multimedia mixing software.

We all couldn’t leave Iceland without seeing the legendary landscape around the island, so we rented a van and spent the whole final day driving around incredible views and alien scapes. Well, this would deserve another whole post, but… hey, I won’t describe my holiday!
I want to thank the organization of the event, Margrét and Aki, the other artists that shared with me such a great times in Reykjavik. I wish to come back soon on this awesome island.
