“Want to turn your mobile device into a musical instrument? Or equip your game with interactive audio, rather than canned samples? You can do it with Pure Data (Pd), an open source visual programming environment that lets you manipulate digital audio in real time. This concise book shows you how to use Pd—with help from the libpd library—as an easily embeddable and widely portable sound engine.”

I’m quite excited about this new release of Gem, one of the most used video library for Pure Data aka Pd.
Check the highlights below to get a glimpse of new features and fixed issues.
Follows the original message from Gem mantainer IOhannes Zmoelnig:

“After long years of waiting (foir you) and hard labour (for me), Gem 0.93 has been released today.
large parts of the underlying engine have been re-written to give you a better experience!
binaries are available for w32 (installer & zip), for the brave and adventurous there is the source code.
binaries for OSX and not available yet, but we hope to get them online soonish.

grab it while it’s hot: http://gem.iem.at/releases/0.93.0

alternatively you can get the files from
https://sourceforge.net/projects/pd-gem

highlights
==========

Objects
——-
frei0r video plugins support

- [mesh], [surface3d],…
- [separator] now takes arguments to define which stacks to push/pop

documentation
————-
- numerous bigfixes and improvements

extra
- [pix_artoolkit] fiducial tracking using ARToolKit
- [pix_drum], [pix_mano]: Jaime Olivier’s analysis objects!

plugins
——-
image acquisition is now factored out into “plugins” this means that you can e.g. easily add new image acquisition methods to the existing [pix_video], [pix_film] and [pix_image] objects

- still image loading/saving now uses plugins on all platforms on w32 you can now use ImageMagick and/or QuickTime for loading/saving images, which greatly increases the number of supported formats. you now get programmatic feedback on image loading success…
- video acquisition now uses plugins on all platforms uniform way to get or set properties/attributes/controls, like hue, saturation, shutter-speed, pan,… working DV support (on linux)
V4L also works with newer kernels (that dropped v4l)
support for IIDC
support for industrial grade GigE cameras using 3rd party libraries such as PYLON, Halcon or AVT’s PvAPI experimental UNICAP support
- film acquisition now uses plugins on all platforms (you could use gmerlin on w32 or osx…)
- recording (film output) now uses plugins on all platforms support for V4L2 (and V4L) loopback devices, in order to generate a fake live video from your Gem window – use it for recording, streaming,…

settings
——–
global & local settings files to modify the overall behaviour of Gem you don’t like Gem’s default framerate, windowsize, font, texture mode,…? change it once and for all

internals
———
- API: this is the first Gem with a “public” API: a selection of headers that you can use to write your own Gem-plugins build-system
- build system: completely switched to a proper autotools
- openGL: updated bundled GLEW
- source organization: re-organized the entire source tree for hopefully better maintainability

lowlights
=========
i need an OSX developer willing to spend some time in getting image acquisition and windowing to work on OSX>=10.6 (x86_64)”
I Cntrl Nature | Audiovisual concert for augmented electric bass guitar, self-designed software and butterfly

I Cntrl Nature (Marco Donnarumma, 2009) is an unambiguous, synesthetic action of audiovisual improvisation.The live act represents the sarcastic celebration of the human instinct finally able to govern the nature. The improvised body gestures of the performer sculpt in real-time the soundscape and the moving images. The living creature on the screen reacts to the movements of the performer on stage in a mutual agreement and attraction.

I forward a message by Chris McCormick to the Pd list.

“PdDroidParty is, I think, the easiest way to get your patches running on your Android devices. It emulates Pd native user interface elements (only toggle and slider implemented so far) so all you need to do is name your patch droidparty_main.pd and copy it to your SD card.

Download and install the apk from here, and then try out the drum machine example by unzipping it to your SD card:

http://mccormick.cx/projects/PdDroidParty/

This is beta software hot off the compiler, but I think it’s just ready enough for use. As always, patches welcome!

“Pd as your embedded audio engine” will teach all about embedding libpd as the sound engine for your app, whether its iPhone, Android, Java, OpenFrameworks, Processing, etc. This workshop provides a broad spectrum of different ways of connecting Pd to other things. Having hardware isn’t a requirement either. The workshop will cover ways of interfacing with Pd from computer to computer. Bring your laptop and devices that you want to install libpd on (Android, iPhone, etc.)

HTML and/or programming knowledge will certainly help. The aim of this workshop is to give a broad spectrum of different ways to interface to Pd. So it will be dipping very slightly into Python, C, Java, Javascript, but this is usually “glue code” and all of the code will be fully provided. You do not need to be proficient in these languages at all, the workshop will also cover methods that also just use Pd with no code at all.

Here is an outline of topics:

* Introduction
* History of Pd as an engine
* Ways to interface with a Pd process
* Midi & OSC
* FUDI
* stdout
* Python + sockets
* pdsend/pdreceive
* Parsing patches in three languages
* libpd on Android and iOS
* PdWebKitDroid
* RjDj and ScenePlayer
* WebPd

0xA is a band made not out of people, but objects and patches. Snippets of codes that bleep and blink are added and modified in the online repository, where it all began. As the repository grows, 0xA evolves with it. Aymeric Mansoux, Chun Lee and Olivier Laruelle are the current active contributors. They have performed 0xA across Europe, North America and Asia in galleries, clubs and festivals.

expr~ is the first music release of 0xA, consists of retro sounding tracks made almost entirely with the [expr~] object in Pure Data. No tweaking of number boxes and sliders, no clever generative algorithms, just switch the audio on and listen.

The source code for this release (implemented in Pure-data) is free software distributable under the terms of the GNU General Public License (version 3 or greater). For repository, see: http://gitorious.org/0xa

What
The workshop offers an hands-on experience and both theoretical and practical training in gestural control of music and bodily musical performance, deploying the brand-new biosensing technology Xth Sense.

Developed by the workshop teacher Marco Donnarumma within a research project at The University of Edinburgh, Xth Sense is a framework for the application of muscle sounds to the biophysical generation and control of music.
It consists of a low cost, DIY biosensing wearable device and an Open Source based software for capture, analysis and audio processing of biological sounds of the body (Pure Data-based).
Muscle sounds are captured in real time and used both as sonic source material and control values for sound effects, enabling the performer to control music simply with his body and kinetic energy.
Forget your mice, MIDI controllers, you will not even need to look at your laptop anymore.

The Xth Sense biosensor was designed to be easily implemented by anyone, no previous experience in electronics is required.
The applications of the Xth Sense technology are manifold: from complex gestural control of samples and audio synthesis, through biophysical generation of music and sounds, to kinetic control of real time digital processing of traditional musical instruments, and more.

Music for Flesh II – solo piece for Xth Sense biosensing wearable device from Marco Donnarumma aka TheSAD on Vimeo.

How
Firstly, participants will be introduced to the Xth Sense Technology by its author and led through the assembling of their own biosensing wearable hardware using the materials provided.
Next, they will become proficient with the Xth Sense software framework: all the features of the framework will be unleashed through practical exercises.
Theoretical background on the state of art of gestural control of music and new musical instruments will be developed by means of an audiovisual review and participatory critical analysis of relevant projects selected by the instructor.
Eventually, participants will combine hardware and software to implement a solo or group performance to be presented during the closing event.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be free to keep the Xth Sense biosensors they built and the related software for their own use.

Perspective participants
The workshop is open to anyone passionate about sound and music. Musical background and education does not matter as long as you are ready to challenge your usual perspective on musical performance.
Composers, producers, sound designers, musicians, field recordists are all welcome to join our team for an innovative and highly creative experience.

No previous experience in electronics or programming is required, however participants should be familiar with digital music creation. Participation is limited to 10 candidates.

Register by sending an email to info@nkprojekt.de

FULL PROGRAM available at http://www.nkprojekt.de/xth-sense…

Requirements and further info
Participants need to provide their own headphones, external soundcards and laptops with Pd-extended already installed.
Free download is available at http://puredata.info/community/projects/software/pd-extended

Musicians interested in augmenting their favourite musical instrument by means of body gestures are encouraged to bring their instrument along.

More information about the Xth Sense can be viewed on-line at

We really had great times in Dublin.
This Irish Pd mini con was a small event, but an excellent review of some works(in-progress) made in Pd. Above all it was a good chance to meet face to face other Pd developers, which sadly does not happen so often as it should.

Many thanks to Rich Duckworth for the efforts in putting the event together.

My presentation concentrated on the research project Xth Sense, a bio-sensing hardware/software framework for the application of muscle sounds to biophysical generation and control of music, video and responsive milieux. I also performed a related solo sonic piece titled “Music for Flesh II”, see more info here.

My highlights of the event were the presentation by Ricky Graham “Performance system in Pd” and the Data Structure Workshop by Joao Pais, an active Pd’r based in Berlin and author of the jmmmp library for Pd extended.

Richard presentation focused on a study of musical gesture; specifically Richard is working on a complex system for live electric guitar which is well described in the video below:

Joao is also author of Click Tracker, “a program designed for composers, conductors and instrumentalists working with modern music. The main goal of the software is to prepare a click track of any score, no matter how complex it is”. Find further info here.

And finally, my impressions of the event. Hope next year will bring another Pd Con in UK!
See bottom page for links to the webpages of the artists involved.

I just ended a new work residency at Inspace, home to a joint research partnership between the School of Informatics and New Media Scotland.
During the residency, me and Brendan F Doyle (Production Sound Engineering) worked on a participatory Musicircus which included a massive, reactive sonic system for 8 Xth Sense biosensors and 8 audio channels.
The piece was premiered two days ago on 15th March during a public event which gathered quite a good amount of people from different backgrounds, music, sound design, informatics, hackers and general public.

It was awesome to see how the audience positively reacted to this novel paradigm of musical performance for muscle sounds, namely generating and controlling electroacoustic sounds and music moving and contracting muscles. After some initial – and expected – disorientation, everybody started realizing how to use the sensors and how to interact with the system, only then the actual Musicircus started.

The event was pretty successful, everything worked out fairly smoothly – except the few things which always “have to” get broken just before the opening – and we received several excited and stimulating feedback. Overall a great and satisfying experience.

During the same night, I also performed my new solo sonic piece Music for Flesh II, for augmented muscle sounds and Xth Sense technology. The acoustic capabilities of Inspace were challenging: glass walls all around, an empty floor which acts as a resonant shield, and interesting sonic reflections happening all around the space. I need to thank again my colleague Brendan for his great work with the sound engineering of the venue and his live mixing during my performance.

Chris Scott (who took the heading picture above during a rehearsal at Inspace) documented with awesome pictures the whole residency, so hopefully soon I’ll post a report, with pics, audio and video!

Tomorrow I’m leaving for a weekend in Ireland; it will be good to change environment for a bit.
The 2011 Pure Data mini-conference is about to kick off at the Trinity College, Dublin. The event is fairly small, but I’m glad that our colleagues at Trinity College made this UK Pd happening possible.

I’ll be presenting a paper which describes the present findings of my research about embodied interaction and augmented muscle sounds. In the evening there will be some Pd concerts and I’ll perform Music for Flesh I, my latest piece for DIY biosensing wearable hardware and Pure Data-based software. An early demo presentation can be viewed here.

On Saturday there will be a workshop by Joao Pais, which you might already know for his jmmmp library for Pd-extended and other Pd goodies. Joao will describe the Pd data structures and their different applications, from real time score drawing to GUI enhancements. I look forward to his workshop, being that Pd data structures are known for their great potential, but is often difficult to gather proper information about their use.

Rich Duckworth is one of the organizer and here’s his blog where you will possibly find some updates about the post-conference.

Pd’er David Doukhan just released cw_binaural~. It looks a very useful and well coded implementation for Pd lovers, I’m going to give it a try asap.
Follow the announcement by David.

“It’s been a long time since PDCON09, and I’ve been quite busy. I finally cleaned up my code, did some improvements, and a user-friendly documentation for the external cw_binaural~ .

In few words, cw_binaural~ is a binaural synthesis external allowing:

*the use of any hrtf database (listen, cipic, …)
* the simultaneous use of different hrtfs
* the choice of the interpolation method used (all pass/pure delay decomposition for better ITD estimation or no decomposition)
* the length of the HRIR considered
* the filtering method (spectral, temporal)
* the method used for the pure delay

Precompiled external (Linux, Mac Intel & Windows) and doc are now available at http://perso.limsi.fr/doukhan/cw_binaural~.tgz
The external sources are available on pd svn: trunk/externals/ddoukhan/cw_binaural~
The external has been initially described in: CW_binaural~: a binaural synthesis external for Pure Data, David Doukhan and Anne Sedes, PDCON09

There have been few improvements since that time that are described in the example patches.
The aim of that external is to be as user friendly as possible, so feel free to tells any remarks helping to improve the external or the help patches, or to ask any question concerning its use.
Hoping you will enjoy it!”

My friend and talented musician Noish~ sent some info about this ecoradio project:

“metaminaFNR is 24h audio stream. A PD patch is running in a server. It chose by random diferents audio-urls from a txt file and play them.
Almost all the audio tracks are hosted at archive.org. In the selection you will listen soundart, noise, algorithmic and generative music, improvisations, field-recordings, microsounds, and more.. all of them with a strong experimental character and under “open” licenses.

all info+code+concept+contens and how to listen here >> http://metaminafnr.hotglue.me/“.

This autonomic radio freely gathers and spreads nodes of sound art instances, works by different composers and sonic artists with a common interest in openness of media, languages and technologies, ecologies of individuals and values. Once again such issue reminds me of the primordial peer2peer character of the Internet, shaped nowadays by capitalistic paradigms into a far less wild environment then it was at its birth.
Peer2peer autonomic radio.

Besides, I’ve been forwarded a text by Julien Ottavi, interestingly interrelating the otherwise usually separated concepts of Eco and Radio in a wider behavioural and social perspective. Give it a read at http://memoir.okno.be/?id=1173, maybe while listening to metaminaFNR Pure Data Radio!

The program you will listen to includes pieces and live recordings by many active and hacktive artists of the present sonic art scene (full list here), among which Francisco López, Daax!, Julien Ottavi, Frank Barknecht, Anton Mobin, d.R.e.G.S, Martin Howse, Pangea, Claudius Maximus, Noish, Chun Lee and your writer here, Marco Donnarumma.
Finally, if you want to set up your own open radio, be sure to read the comprehensive guidelines which Noish added to the project webpage!
You can download the Pure Data patch, set it up on your server and start streaming your sonic nodes!

I’ll be giving a talk and demo of PureData at the next Edinburgh Linux User Group Meeting on Thursday 3rd February.
The meeting is held at the Edinburgh Conference and Training Centre, St Mary’s Street Edinburgh (map at http://tinyurl.com/5r6ebgp ) and starts at 7:30pm. Tea, Coffee and biscuits are available free of charge.

Creativity, hacktive behaviours, self-taught quasi-programming and new media openness.

These keywords quite well summarize the personal artistic research I’ll be presenting at Edlug. From a concept to its practical realization, an artistic work is always a mixture of theories and technical skills and often the hardest task is to keep the work enough close to the original idea which it was generated from.
In these days digital multimedia tools are notably contributing to enhance, and somehow change, the human capability of creation; they can expand our abilities, be thought-provoking and change viewpoints on values and social idioms. This stands true unless we consider how capitalism affects innovators and innovation and the modalities by which we undergo a capital-guerrilla dissemination of closed source tools. In this perspective creativity looses its charachter of authenticness. However, a worldwide actual community of makers, developers, artists and geeks works relentlessy to provide an awesome and infinite set of free, open tools by which an artist can express a creative message and provide a socio-political declaration of intellectual and technical independence.

My first approach to Pure Data dates back to 2004; during these years my work encompassed diverse topics such as biosensing technology, musical and theatrical performance, participatory practice and semantic hacking of Internet data set. These works would have not been possible without a growing awareness of the radical importance of openness of tools and techniques and I hope to provide a comprehensive insight about the possibilities and the challenges that an hacktive creative behaviour can foster.

Talk will be followed by a demo presentation of a biosensing framework (hardware/software) for gestural control of music and responsive milieux I’m currently developing (with the support of The University of Edinburgh and the Dorkbot ALBA group at the Edinburgh Hacklab). Participants will be able to wear the devices and make some noise!

http://res.marcodonnarumma.com

Thanks Jan at Edlug for organizing the event.
Below the original message by Hans.

Working again with Bobby Pietrusko and Stewart Smith, I created sonification for visualization of data about the global wine industry. It opened recently at SFMOMA in San Francisco. You can see a little snippet here:

http://at.or.at/hans/undervine/

And here’s a chunk from a scene that didn’t make the final cut be we like anyway:
http://at.or.at/hans/blog/2010/11/21/highlighting-data-with-sound/

“Wine is a potent force in contemporary life, perhaps the only comestible to produce its own visual culture. How Wine Became Modern, the first exhibition of its kind, looks at the world of wine and the role that architecture, design, and media have played in its stunning transformation over the past three decades. Developed in collaboration with the New York architecture studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the exhibition features historical artifacts, architectural models, multimedia installations, newly commissioned artworks, and even a “smell wall” to provide a richly textured experience in the galleries. Come discover how important cultural preoccupations of our day, such as the meaning of “place” and “authenticity” in our increasingly global and virtual world, play out at this uniquely fertile intersection of nature and culture. At once a nuanced investigation and a vivid sensory and aesthetic experience, this exhibition presents wine as you’ve never seen it before.”
