In-depth Theoretical and practical audiovisual live performance seminary using FLOSS.
Pure Data audiovisual real-time processing, tricks and tips to create your own performance tool.

Description

The seminary consists of four parts. During the introduction the participants acquire a basic theoretical knowledge about Live Media. The introduction is extended through a review of selected audiovisual
works in order to explore and analyse the potential of the audiovisual research.

Therefore participants are introduced to the concept of FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software), they familiarize with few FLOSS software as they understand its practical and theoretical keystones.

In the second part participants learn the meaning of real-time audio-video data processing reviewing the most common production tools. Eventually they deal with the process of an audiovisual performance pre-production using FLOSS: from brainstorming and concept design, through planning of the audiovisual
format, to the collection of support materials such as texts, tutorials, and the drawing of sketches representing the logic structure of data processing.

The third part focus on Pure Data graphical programming environment.
Participants learn to communicate with Pd and how to surf through the audio and visual processing libraries. They build basic processing structures and discover tricks and tips to create their own
performance tool.

For the last part the work group is split in smaller groups. Through practical individual exercises participants acquire the technical know-how about the creation/collection of moving images and sonic
events within the Pure Data graphical programming environment, thus they develop an original software, following the standard realisation steps: beta-testing; analysis of errors and its correction; and final testing during a collective jam performance.

Aim

The seminary seeks to give the participants who don’t have previous experience in programming and Live Media practice the needed theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to feel comfortable
within the FLOSS creation environment. The classes’ aim is to make the participants able to understand and assimilate the diverse passages of the creation process of software ad-hoc in order to be independent during the planning and development of a FLOSS project (musical, audiovisual, multi-media or theatre pieces) using the audiovisual language.

Who’s it for

Musicians, producers, live visualists, film-makers, programmers, sound designers or passionates of digital arts or electronic music and experimentation who want to enhance and extend their skills and tools will find this seminary inspirational and fundamental for the further development of their works and creative ideas, free from the limitations of user-friendly and proprietary software.

No previous programming experience is needed.

What to bring

Participants are invited to bring their laptops and encouraged to bring musical instruments, cameras, photo cameras, webcam, microphones, sensors, MIDI devices and fresh, unusual ideas!

Electron Club presents an introduction to Pure Data, a real-time graphical programming environment for audio, video, and graphical processing.

Pure Data is the third major branch of the family of patcher programming languages known as Max originally developed by Miller Puckette and company at IRCAM. Pd is free multi-platform software.

This two day workshop will bring participants through the basic idioms of dataflow, real-time audio and visual processing and networking. It is lead by Edinburgh based new media artists Marco Donnarumma and Ioann Maria.

What:

Participants will learn how to communicate with Pd and surf through the audio and visual processing objects libraries. Together we’ll build basic processing audio and video structures and discover tricks and tips to create our own performance tool.

No previous programming experience is needed.

High Spheres – Open air multi-channel participative concert @ Re-New Festival, Denmark

On 18th May at 19.30 at Huset i Magstræde, Copenhagen, Denmark, Re-New Digital Arts Festival kicks off prensenting ‘High Spheres’ a participative multi-channel concert for found objects and reactive generative music by Edinburgh based new media and sound artist Marco Donnarumma.

The action takes place open air. No musical instruments are provided, but stones and leaves. Audience can use six microphones and a 6.1 surround system to amplify any kind of sound they wish to produce.
The whole sonic matter is managed by a Pure Data-based software for generative music developed by the author, which interacts with the audience processing sounds in real-time, analyzing the input signals and generating new sounds and textures out of the collected data.

An endless sonic data flow which, once started, will live and grow beyond the time-space of the action. Generative electroacoustic music for non-musicians.
If you’re in the city you’re very welcome to freely join our self-organized orchestra and contribute to the creation of our brand-new collective soundscape.

Golden Shield Music

According to Wikipedia the Golden Shield, sometimes referred to as the “Great Firewall of China” is a censorship and surveillance project operated by the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) division of the Communist government of China. The project started in 1998 and began operations in November of 2003. It involves the massive use of web technologies such as IP (Internet Protocol address, a computer’s network address) blocking, DNS filtering and redirection, URL filtering, Packet filtering, Connection reset to censor specific contents—mostly, but not only, political or historical subjects—through web search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Msn (Google has of course recently bypassed the Golden Shield – users landing on google.cn are automatically redirected to uncensored Google Hong Kong google.com.hk). Since such serious censorship is ignored by many, a clever and immediate way to improve the visibility of this issue is to explore it through art.

Golden Shield Music collects the IP address of the twelve sites that are most screened by the Golden Shield to create an automated MIDI polyphonic synthesizer. Following a few basic rules, IP addresses are translated in notes formed by several voices. Resulting notes are ordered by the amount of pages the Golden Shield obscured for each IP address. This process yields the so-called “Golden Shield music”, a generative composition for eight audio channels that sits somewhere between net.art and sound art. Data organizes the musical notation, establishing an abstract relationship between Internet information and musical algorithms which sounds harmonious and “handcrafted”.

Pure Data for Live Media workshop Cagliari Conservatory

Just came back from a three days in-depth workshop at Pierluigi da Palestrina Conservatory in Cagliari, Italy. This time the course focused on dataflow practices for Live Media.
The course has been organized by Spaziomusica Association during the annual festival Music in Touch, which every year creates new connections among traditional musical composition and new technologies featuring concerts and installation projects by established composers and new media professionals.
The atmosphere in Cagliari was cozy and warm. We could enjoy an early spring, a shiny sun and almost 20 degrees.

Participants were MA students of the Electronic Music, Music and New Technology and Electroacoustic Music courses. They were extremely interested in Pure Data and dataflow techniques, although for most of them it was the first direct approach with a graphical programming environment. After a brief audiovisual review of some interesting works ranging from live performances to experimental videos, we started with the basic of Pd, building simple processes in order to give a clear idea of real-time data processing.
Then I slightly forced them to get their hands dirty with some real-time video processing and few common idioms for audio synthesis and manipulation. I used the term “forced” because I did not give them any ready patch, but explaining step-by-step simple processes we built together useful examples.

Their responsiveness was awesome and with my great satisfaction we went through the main topics of the course pretty fast. In the end we also had time to have a chat about network data exchange, i.e. OSC, wi-fi server and client communication protocols, and later on few participants were already having fun exchanging data through the conservatory network or talking to a Monome.

In the end I made a brief talk explaining the most typical setup for live audiovisual performance and how to implement all the techniques we just learned into an actual audiovisual concert; single player with a musical instrument controlling MIDI and/or OSC hardware, two players exchanging audio and video data over a network and a quintet including different instruments, a server machine receiving and organizing data coming from few clients, creating feedback interactions among each player of the group.

On the first night I also had the chance to attend to an amazing concert of a traditional choir from Sardinia. Apart from the breathtaking location – S. Saturnino’s church – the experience of listening to a live performance of this kind is something unbelievable. The strength of their five voices, the incredible harmony they were able to create was something I can’t describe. Perhaps I felt the same feelings when for the first time I had the chance to listen an organ playing in a cathedral. Your body physically “feels” the sound, the acoustic energy in all its force.

I have to say I really enjoyed my time in Cagliari, probably I was missing a beautiful sky and a “normal” temperature, but for sure the wonderful hospitality of few friends played the most important role. Thus I have to say thank you to the Signorafranca guys and Riccardo, and Fabrizio Caglia for the excellent organization of the course. Hope to come back soon to Sardinia and maybe see some works of my students…

MA Sound Design with Pure Data and more

Here I am, back in Italy for some time. Next week I’ll be teaching the first lesson of a course in Sound Design for sensitive environment at LABA, Brescia Academy of Fine Arts. The course is included in the study program of a Master of Art in New Media and New Technology for Art.
Along with the usual sound design techniques the course includes excursions in soundscape studies and sound art. Students use only free software for audio real-time processing and interactive sonification such as Pure Data graphical programming environment.
The LABA MA also includes courses held by Massimo Banzi (Tinker.it/Arduino), Otolab, Luca Carrubba.

When Davide Anni, department director at LABA, contacted me a while ago, I was positively surprised by his strong wish to bring free software inside the university program. His efforts did not start only recently, in fact the Academy already uses a free-software-based Wi-fi Internet connection, computers running Linux flavour are available to the students and events and workshop about FLOSS world take place on a regular basis, last event AgitMedia included a conference by Richard Stallman, Arduino and Pure Data workshop.

I imagine this is probably nothing new to my international readers, but I can confirm it represents a promising exception to the hyper-conservative rule of today Italian universities, especially in this time while Italy and its culture seems to be falling in an endless black hole.
I am looking forward to start this venture and I hope to publish patches, files and texts along the way, to document this experience… so watch this space.

Pd workshop and Live performance @ AHAcktitude

I have been away from the blog for a while now, my apologies. January became definitely busy since its first day and I didn’t have time to proper dedicate myself to writing. Let’s also say I deserved few holidays…

Then let’s start where we left.

It’s December 2009 and I’m flying to Milan to participate to “AHAcktitude ‘09, the second collective meeting of the aha@ecn.org mailing list community, one of the lists hosted by the historical independent server Isole Nella Rete (Islands in the Net), and funding element of the networking project AHA:Activism-Hacking-Artivism.
By adopting the same strategy as Hackmeetings, AHAcktitude is organised and managed directly by the participants who can propose and share seminars or projects via the aha@lists.ecn.org list. AHAcktitude began as a space for dialogue and sharing, with the purpose of learning and spreading practices and knowledge in a free environment.” via AHA website.
I contributed to the event holding a Pd workshop at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts together with Luca Carrubba – Husk and Eleonora Oreggia – xname – we presented our self-designed sofware for audiovideo processing ans streaming (C::NTR::L, Qeve and Virtual Entity) and I also had the chance to perform the latest version of ‘I C::ntr::l Nature’ alongside with Otolab and MSST (Glerm Soares, Ricardo Brazileiro and Husk).

Report PureData workshop AgitMedia Italy

I just came back from Brescia where I held a two-days PureData workshop. Our class featured 16 students from North Italy and for almost all of them was the first time they get their hands dirty with a graphical programming environment.
I introduced the Pd language, therefore we went through an introduction to sound creation with sonic dataflow processes.

The most interesting aspect of the workshop has been to open up the student’s minds to the unknown field of free creation. Some of them were already doing music and few experiments in sound with proprietary softwares, but none of them was actually aware of the potential of a free environment for sound design and music production and the completely different approach it requires.

Their reactions has been diverse, but in general most of them were pretty excited about the idea to be – so unexpectedly – free to practically draw on a canvas the ideas they had in their mind. One becomes aware that he doesn’t have to do what Ableton or Reason tell one can do, instead one can take over these closed paths and re-think from scratch his own concept of “creation”.

These two days were only the first half of the whole workshop we planned together with Husk (Italian Pd developer and hacktivist). On 5 and 6 December he’s going to introduce the Pd video libraries, i.e. GEM, PDP and Gridflow. In the end of the four days participants should have a basic, solid knowledge about Pd environment and hopefully some of them will bring forward the project they started during the course.

Special thanks to Davide Anni and Anna Guzzi (Ualuba Association and LABA) for their awesome hospitality and their great efforts in making this workshop happen. Unfortunately most of the italian educational institutions still seems to be allarmingly blind towards open/free tools for artistic creation, even though they are nowadays commonly used by many artists in different fields of research. I hope someone “up there” will finally open his eyes from now on, setting italian students free to learn.

I gladly announce the publication of Vague Terrain 15: .microsound, including my piece Sand Horyzon – a composition excerpt of live improvisational computing in Pd using an augmented electric bass guitar.
The whole release brings you two compilations of fine experimental music, text and videos created by the community behind .microsound list (which has just celebrated its ten years) and selected by american composer Kim Cascone.
As Kim states in his article:

“The .microsound community, drawing from areas as discontinuous as Gilles Deleuze, Curtis Roads and the Aphex Twin, is a ‘body without organs’ in Deleuzian parlance; an amorphous object, a fluid changing shape as its poured into different containers…”
“…In order to bracket the various styles of sound art and music I used the Deleuzian concepts of ’smooth space’ and ’striated space.’ Striated space is where I put all the pieces that made use of gesture and beats while ’smooth space’ is where I put pieces that made use of texture and internal movement. But within those two categories what constitutes a .microsound-sounding piece becomes blurred…”

Report roBOT Festival 2009 Bologna

I had definitely great days in there. The roBOT festival – organized by Shape Association – took place at Palazzo Re Enzo – Bologna – one of the most beautiful ancient building in Bologna and probably in whole Italy.

Look at the ‘Sala del Podestà’ picture below to get a glimpse about the rest of the building. Something awesome.
The festival is more clubbing oriented, but since this year they established a call for works located in the experimental audiovisual field.
That’s how i got to participate alongside with Ape5+Eraser, EricaIlCane, Saul Saguatti, Teatrino Elettrico and Pixelnoizz.
I could enjoy a warm and quiet atmosphere and nice chats with the technical staff (in the picture).
You know? one of the best thing that can happen to an artist going to perform somewhere is to get in touch with professional, friendly technicians who understand his needs… and that’s what has happened.

On Wednesday, the opening was reserved to Carl Craig and his SHAPE project. Highly acclaimed musical project connecting and blending techno and classical musical languages. On Thursday has started the experimental section of roBOT with the first three performances including me, Pixelnoizz and EricaIlCane.
I made a shorter performance, trying to understand how to relate with the space of the huge concert hall. It hasn’t been easy to understand how to play in such a space, where the sound jump from one side of the roof to another, like playing in a big Gothic church.
EricaIlCane and his crew has showed ‘Piove, Governo Ladro’ an evocative imagery, sometimes more decorative sometimes more dreamy. Playing inside of a semi-transparent box they have spread some interesting noise with four audio channels surrounding the installation.

In between on Friday i had the chance to get to know the american artist John Duncan. Incredibly he was holding an informal meeting with some young artists at the same place where i’ve been hosted (Nosadella.2 – residency for artists and curator).
So i participate to the meeting with him and Melissa Pasut and in the end we spent the night together with a lovely dinner and other friend Elisa DelPrete. It’s useless to say it has been an inspiring meeting.

Finally on Saturday I’ve met a lot of old friends and I’ve also met for the first time the Italian artists Ape5 and Eraser. They proposed their latest performance ‘Future sounds like Past Toys’ mixing the ethereal music of Eraser (heavy circuit bending on old toys) with a glitch visual imagery provided by Ape5.

Then i repeated my performance ‘I C::ntr::l Nature’ - audiovisual improvisation for augmented electric bass guitar, butterfly and self-designed software C::NTR::L, Pure Data based - and i have to say it has been one of the best performance I’ve ever made since I’m traveling around with this project.
I was feeling this kind of emotive tension who often push a creative mind to get out his best.
The sound was finally as i wish it would have been and a lot of people showed up to attend to the concert.
I’m usually really critic towards my concerts but this time I’ve felt something too good around, maybe the presence of many friends, maybe the great location, maybe the proper astral plane connections… anyway the show was strong and impressive.

My friend Carlotta Piccinini from Visuallab has been so kind to shoot almost all the performance with an excellent camera, so be patient and expect a new video reel from the performance.

After the performances (including also Byetone who was performing at my same time, I would have loved to attend) everybody has moved to the Link for the last club night of the festival. Nice time in there supporting old good friends Vj Hash and Sapo during their vj set, and around 5am everybody has jumped in the car driving back home.

Once again Sunday has come and I’ve taken the last tour around the city, sitting in a park and enjoying the last rays of sun – because in Milan the rain was waiting for me.
I end the report with this picture: a public park in Bologna dedicated to the 11st September 2001.
I’ve the maximum respect for that event (and also a lot of doubts and anxiety), but could you tell me why in Italy we should dedicate a park to this date???
Sorry but i cannot agree with that.

Thanks to all the people from roBOT staff – Marcella, Federica and all the technical staff – and thanks also to all the people who showed up for my concert. It means a lot to me, especially here in Italy.

It has been an intensive experience, 10 participants, 2 days, 16 hours and a lot of lab sessions.

I had the pleasure to show the potential and the basic dataflow strategies of Pure Data to the professors of the wellknown swedish Game Development & Design department, infact the workshop was focused on real-time audiovisual processing for Game Development and Narrative Media.

3rd international PureData Convention 09

Next week I’m flying to Sao Paulo, Brasil. I’ve been selected to perform at the 3rd International Pure Data Convention ‘09 with the work ‘I C::ntr::l Nature’ – solo audiovisual performance for augmented bass guitar.

The work is completely produced and performed with the self-designed software ‘C::NTR::L 1.2 Beta’ - PureData based software for real-time audiovisual improvvisation which exploits physical computing technology.
The software is free for download and use, check this page.

It will be an honour for me to show the results of my research in the physical computing enviroment and to contribute to the success of this 3rd convention, but above all i’m expecting a great experience, full of contents, inspiration and new ideas.

I’m specially looking forward to attend to the series of conferences focused on the Pd development where also Miller Puckette – the creator of Pd – will hold a conference about Multiprocessing for Pd.

Here you are what the Pd Convention is all about:

“The International Convention for Puredata (Pd) is a periodic event that started in 2004 and is the most important event of the community of developers and enthusiasts of Pd. Pd is a programming language used for the development of interactive applications, allowing the manipulation of data flow in real-time.

As a free open source software, the developer’s community is vast and independent, and is characterized by having a rich and eterogeneous profile formed by researchers, developers and designers with a strong interaction and internal productivity.

There are several projects that use Pd in the area of robotics, psychoacoustic, new physical interfaces and open-hardware, artificial intelligence and pattern recognition signal, artistic and commercial projects, among others. In the Brazilian edition, we want also to improve the Brazilian community of developers, which has grown over the past two years becoming part of the international scene.”

PureData Workshop July Sweden

I’m finally going to the North, can’t wait!
I will be holding a Pure Data Workshop together with Deftoo at the Gotland University – Institute for Technology, Art and New Media – in Sweden.

It will be an intensive workshop (mostly for who doesn’t have any previous experience in graphical programming) and it foresees a theoric introduction and much, much laboratory work.

The workshop will be focused on GEM (the most used Pd video library), Sonic Art, Audiovisualism, Human-Computer Interaction.
The aim will be to create intermediate knowledge about the production of contents and tools exploiting audiovisual real-time processing in an open-source enviroment, in order to apply this techniques and/or contents to Game Design, Narrative and Time-based Media.

Unfortunately, subscriptions for this workshop are reserved to the University’s professors, anyway i hope to get you involved soon posting some tasty pictures.

S-Block Festival – Advanced Music and Live Audiovisual Art

I’ve been invited to participate to the first edition of S-Block Festival - international festival of Advanced Music, Audiovisual Art and Performances - at Interventionsraum in the centre of Stuttgart, DE.

The festival will take place on 19-20 June and will showcase many different projects of experimental music, live videos and neo-theather, highlighting the soulful artistic local scene plus guest international artists.

I’ll perform ‘I C::ntr::l Nature’ solo audiovisual performance for augmented E-bass guitar - recently performed at NEMO festival in Paris and Ausklang Festival in Hamburg. The performance is powered by the self-designed software C::NTR::L (released as public beta version with GPL license infos here).

I’m glad to come back to Stuttgart with this project because last year i performed its first demo version exactly there in Stuttgart during the monthly Max.Experimentell event and it has been an hyper-stimulating experience for the further developments of the performance.

I highly recomend to join this event since it’s going to be a new important mirror of the most recent researches in Live and Mixed Media.

New free release: Ausklang live recordings

I’m glad to announce the official release of TheSAD’s fifth solo audio work: the live recordings of my concert at the Ausklang festival in Hamburg on the 28th December 2008.
The music/sounds you will listen to are the result of free improvisation exclusively based on the Electric Bass guitar, processed in real-time with C::NTR::L, the free software i developed in PureData which transform a standard musical instrument in an augmented tool for audio/video processing, thanks to physical computing.
No previous composition neither further editing, everything is improvised and recorded live.

I’ve been invited in New Delhi, India to take part in the annual festival “Carnival of e-Creativity” to present C::NTR::L 1.0 beta – free, open-source software for audiovisual live improvisation w/ phisycal computing i developed in PureData.

Unfortunately due to some technical delays i won’t be able to attend phisically to the event, but the friend Shankar Barua – artist and Trustee Manager of the event – will be so kind to present in my place C::NTR::L to the indian audience.

What does Free and Open Source software (FLOSS) provide to artists and designers – beyond just free alternatives to established tools from Photoshop to Final Cut?
“FLOSS+Art” is the first book to answer this question. It shows how the value of Free Software lies in its differences and creative challenges, as opposed to out-of-the-box and off-the-shelf solutions; how it allows to work and collaborate differently with computers, and therefore enable different kinds of art and design.

C::NTR::L AV augmented bass guitar improvisation from TheSAD on Vimeo.

Live action of audiovisual improvisation.
This work is performed with the electric bass guitar and the custom-made software C::NTR::L, Human-Computer Interface for physical computing i developed in Pure Data.
This was the first time i test the version 1.0 of C::NTR::L (feat. audiovideo modules and efx triggered in real-time by your partiture), and i can say it seems it works pretty good.
But please, share your ideas about it…im trying to develop the software for public use (also for no-pd’r).

Summercamp, Laboral Gijon

I keep on with my thesis about the multimedia creation and new A/V formats which will be ready for the nest year. Now, after a world overview, i’m working on the spanish live visual scene.

It was a pleasure to know Yves Degoyon, great contributor of the PD Community, who’s currently living in Barcellona. Toghether with Lluis Gomez they created a performance for the Summercamp.

I didn’t know people from the Hangar in Barcellona and many of the partecipants to the summercamp, which is a great chance to know each other and share. Here we are in a big empty building, fullfilled of tables where everybody is working, alone or in groups.

We find working areas for the creation of hardware, the puredata community, video maker, and streaming set of the talks and many performers, everything inside this new museum of contemporary art hosting exhibitions of national and international artists.
